Either someone beat me to it back in 2002 or it fell out cause I don't see it.

This does work great on my 2003.

I tried this on a 2011 super duty and not much luck. Is there something else I can try?

I had to play around with a few different sockets until I found one that I could beat onto the nut enough to lower the spare.

One the spare is not blocking your access, it is easy to remove the offending part, and then a flat blade will engage the mechanism.

They have those sockets for sale with the "reverse grabbing grooves" inside for removing rounded head nuts/bolts and you can even use them on lug nuts.

After reading this post I decided to make my own tool to remove my lock. I didn't have enough extensions so I went to HD and bought a short piece of 3/8 rebar, a Husky 9/16 6pt socket and a 1/2" nut. About $5. I cut the rebar to length, welded the socket on one end and the nut on the other. A couple good whacks with a hammer and using a 3/4" socket lowered the spare. Then I yanked it out of the tube and the lock came with it. Woohoo! So, I ground off the end where the keeper ring is and ran a cpl beads to hold it in the socket. Now I have a tool to lower the spare besides the jack tools. BTW, is a spare dated Nov. 2001 bad? LOL

Nice work! I guess that was cheaper than buying enough extensions.

When I travel I keep a 18v 1/2 impact. Makes lowering that tire quick work.

Just used it, the biggest one works to lower the tire.

I used a gas pipe with a cotter pin clipped to one end of it. tapped it onto the locking device with a small hammer and was able to turn the system by hand to lower the wheel....to my surprise...once I pulled back on the gas pipe....the locking device came out as well and now I can use a regular crank on it with out the key.

On my 2008, the bolt extrator socket did not work.

Not all Ford dealers have the full key set to find out which one you have. I lowered my spare with a SEARS CRAFTSMAN stripped bolt head remover kit. You can get the set at Sears for about $30 bucks if you dont already have it. They fit in a standard socket. You will need a long 3/8" extension to reach the key, or a few of them together. Just chuck up the extension in a 1/2" cordless drill, reverse drill direction(counter clockwise), push the bolt remover onto the key with a little pressure and the tire will drop in about 5 seconds! Once it is down, pull off the plastic tube for the crank, use a flat screwdriver to pop off the key revealing a rectangular hole in the tire hoist. You can then either leave it off like I did, or take the key to Ford where they should be able to order the correct replacement. Replace the crank tube and your done. Also, if you dont have a factory crank kit you can use that same 3/8" extension to raise and lower the tire without any socket on the end of it. The extension will fit in the hole in the hoist by itself.

Thanks for helping the spare tire thieves.

The thieves that want a spare will just cut the cable and then they have it.

The lock just deters casual thieves and makes it no longer a crime of opportunity.

When is ford gonna put the spare under a door in the box to keep it clean, rust free, and accessible without tools and grief? Honda has done it with their "truck", I expected ford to copy it by now but they must be behind a few years yet.

Look how nice this is, expect ford to copy this within 10 years (they are a little slow).
