427 SOHC reproduction

My dad is considering buildind a 427sohc for his prostreet 56f100 that currently has a 460. he likes the look of the 427sohc and heard about aftermarket parts to build one. does anybody have any info on this subject?

Stick with the 460.

The SOHC 427 would be quite expensive to replicate.

Block:

Blocks at Genesis427.com

$3500 in iron.

I can't find anything on the web about reproduction heads. Originals would be very expensive.

For the money involved, you could probably build two 700 horse 460s. (wag)

If money was the sole driving issue we would all be using S.B. Chevys...

All the parts for the SOHC are availablle from a number of suppliers. They are expensive. The heads alone run +/- $5000. They are cool beyond description.

There is a shop here locally that has a 427 SOHC that is complete and has a blower on it. You might be able to get it for around $35,000. Also there is another guy who has four 427 SOHC engines still in crates, that you might be able to get one for $25,000. or so. He is getting old, and you might be able to buy one of them from him. "If he likes you". He is a little excentric. I am not sure when he bought his, but back in 1969 a lot of Ford dealers were selling all their 427 SOHC engines in crates. At that time they were going for $1,000. each. Back then $1,000. was a lot of money.

SOHC would require 2 cams, one over each head.

See the 385 forums "Boss 429", seems the OP may have found a way to get around just having a garden variety 460 without resorting to the unobtainable....

NOT unobtainable.
Every single SOHC part is now being reproduced.

Not cheap - but we already covered that. I can appreciate inexpensive hot rodding and practice it myself. I find myself often building engines that I cannot personally afford. But there are a fair number of folks whose fortunes and desires are able to handle the cost of upscale projects.

The SOHC is definitely on the list of engines to have, and looks way cool. As mentions its doable in aftermarket form, if you have the funds. Another awesome, but non-FE motor would be the Kaase Boss 429 conversion. It uses a STOCK 429/460 block, and would still be a awesome looking motor in a '56.

Stay away from the Jim Dove and Paul Solomon Parts...I hate saying this about Paul..As he's a nice guy...But there parts are Chit ! And Also the Munru parts out of OZ..there having alot of problems with them that cant even be machined out!!

How I know this? I have a good friend that I know..And he Builds them for a living along with many other fords for resto work and resto Mod work...and the only parts he will use now is Bill Coons out of MI,But yeah better have deep pockets..

The Cammers are cool... But with Kaase's new 385 series Hemi (B9) type heads.. Its nothing to get a streetable 557" Ford Hemi out of one !and an easy 800+HP on pump gas!! JMO....as its not my money!!
