1982 Ford - Q's on Carb, Doors, Dash, Radio, Tailgate

I picked up a 1982 Ford with 87,000 original miles. Inline 6, 4 speed tranny, 4wd, spent most of its life as a prison truck in Iowa.

So here's the shopping list of questions:

1) Carb

Air pump seems to be blocked off somehow with the belt removed. Truck seems to run rich at start up and will flood out if you bog it in third.

What does the air pump do and should I hook it up?

What models of air pumps will fit on it, any 1980 to 1986?
(F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)

Anything else to do with the rich running? It starts well, just blows black smoke that doesn't smell like oil smoke.

2) Doors

Doors need new seals and seem to hang wrong. Can you get new bushings?

Will any 1980 to 1986 door fit on it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)

3) Dash

Dash is shot. Do those ebay covers work?

4) Radio is shot.

Will any 1980 to 1986 radio fit in it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)

5) Tailgate is long gone (it had a fifth wheel in it for awhile)

Will any 1980 to 1986 tailgate fit in it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)

6) Is there a spot with online parts diagrams or manuals for it?

It pumps air and yes you should, it takes no HP to run. it aids in burning of HC in the cat (but its not feedback driven so its a best guess) it has at least a diverter valve in that year to pump to the outside air on throttle close so you dont get backfires from hell (and blow the pump up to boot)

If the cat is not burning then you could have a sooty tailpipe, but the goal is to not give the cat too much to do. Id check any metering valves for wear, high float levels and suspect accelerator pumps for bogging. the rebuild kit is <$20 at advance and can be done with kitchen utensils.

What models of air pumps will fit on it, any 1980 to 1986?

if it bolts it fits. but 6 cyl pumps aint that hard to find. hit the yards.

2) Doors

Doors need new seals and seem to hang wrong. Can you get new bushings?
yes, bushing and pin kits are easy, so are latch catches. door seals - 80-96 seem to be the same, just rip a good set off a newer truck - thats what I did. Or else spend $100 - your call.

Will any 1980 to 1986 door fit on it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
80-96 actually. but for strict no-drilling mirror compatibility, 80-91 are exact

3) Dash

Dash is shot. Do those ebay covers work?
they look like crap. try and find a good factory cover at a yard (harder than finding an honest democrat)

4) Radio is shot.

Will any 1980 to 1986 radio fit in it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
yes and many were swapped out by owners years ago and will have the unobtanium metal shaft style faceplate adaptors in them - I found two last weekend at my yard, a pioneer and sony, all with cassettes, all in great shape

5) Tailgate is long gone (it had a fifth wheel in it for awhile)

Will any 1980 to 1986 tailgate fit in it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
yes

6) Is there a spot with online parts diagrams or manuals for it?
LMC is a good place to start, then ebay for the body/mechanical/electical manual

Wow, thanks.

That is the best response I've ever received on a forum.

The Air Pump helps the Catylitic Converter to convert harmful exaust gasses into innert gas. It wont cause the truck to run rich.

It may just need a carb rebuild. Sticking or Dirty float needle valve, or mis adjust float is my guess for right now.

What models of air pumps will fit on it, any 1980 to 1986?
(F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
They are year specific. You need to get the correct one for your truck, and year, if you replace it.

Anything else to do with the rich running? It starts well, just blows black smoke that doesn't smell like oil smoke.
Stuck or dirty float needle valve or misadjusted float is my guess.

2) Doors

Doors need new seals and seem to hang wrong. Can you get new bushings?

Will any 1980 to 1986 door fit on it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
Yes all doors from 1980 to 1996 F-series will fit. However after 1986 the inside panels and glass are different.

You can get hinge bushing kits at most local parts stores. This is what I would do. Also the door seals fit 1980 to 1996 as well.

Dash is shot. Do those ebay covers work?
Not really. Ford still sells the dash pad though in charcoal gray. But be prepared to spend $$$ for it.

4) Radio is shot.

Will any 1980 to 1986 radio fit in it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
Factory Radios will fit 1980 to at least 1999, if you have the right type of radio, brackets, and bezel. However restoration specific years are...

1980-1981 Shaft Mount.

1982 Shaft Mount, (Exactly the same as the 1980-1981 radio except it has the 1982-1996 plugs)

1983-1984 Shaft Mount, (Exactly as the 1982, except Radio dial and face plate is updated.)

1984-1986 Din style Mount.

Later model Ford radios from the 90's that can fit require the mounting bracket from the later model Larger F-600/F-900 trucks.

5) Tailgate is long gone (it had a fifth wheel in it for awhile)

Will any 1980 to 1986 tailgate fit in it? (F150 or F250 2wd or 4wd?)
Not without some modification.

There are two types of tailgate used on 1980-1986 trucks from the factory.

1980-1982 Uses a tailgate with metal support arms.

1983-1986 uses a tailgate with support cables.

You can interchange them, but if you use 1983-1986 gate you will have to drill holes in the tailgate, and modify the support portion on the truck to accept the cables, or metal support arms.

1987 to 1996 tailgates can also work but require more modification.

6) Is there a spot with online parts diagrams or manuals for it?
You can buy them at your local auto store, and on e-bay. I've gotten a lot of literature for my 1981 on e-bay. Also being friends with local Ford Partsmen helps a great deal.

Alright, another 82 4x4 with a buzzing 1/2 dozen from Iowa. Rebuilding that 1bbl carb will be the best place to start. Keep us posted.

Make sure the bolts holding the carb on are tight. If any air leaks, runs poorly

Thanks for all the input guys, it really helps me out.

So I think I'm going to get a carb rebuild kit and door pins from the local auto parts shop and then hit the junkyard.

Its really hard for me not to buy trucks like this and then do a wholescale interior transplant though:

1983 F150 351W 4x4 - $250 (Inver Grove Heights)

Regular cab 8ft box. Needs work, Has new oil pump, distributor, plug wires, reman carbureator. Nice interior, solid overall, has rust but not a terrible eyesore. For some reason the starter will kick out when turning over. flywheel looks good but I'm not 100% just looking at it. Ive tried shimming it and everything, even a new starter. maybe someone knows something I dont know... I had it running with 1 shim setup and it ran and drove 4by worked and tranny shifted fine. Truck has just sat for a while and has a few demons come steal it from me, $250 Call me and take it away... (651)707-4568 call anytime --Mike

One more quick one for you guys, is there any difference in the doors or dash for the supercab vs. regular cab?

I'm pretty sure there isn't, but hate to buy non-returnable parts from a junk yard and then have to custom modify them to fit (or maybe I like doing that, sometimes I forget : )

In any case, thanks for the help. Arne

They are the same.

What color dash do you need? I have a pretty nice blue one and I also have a really nice 80/82 tail gate with trim panel (strap type not cable).

Where are you located? You should finish filling out your profile so we can tell.

BTW: I would not make it a habit of posting phone numbers on the internet. Especially when they aren't yours.

I'm in MN, so it probably wouldn't work.

The dude listed his number on craigslist, and I'm pretty sure you can get any number in the phone book off the internet, but I'll certainly take it out of my post if you'd rather it not be there.

Thanks, Arne
