So, I ran to Brooklyn (NY) his weekend, left home at 1am Saturday and was back around 11am on Sunday. Here are some MPG numbers for y'all:
- Ohio flatlands, fair weather - 20mpg.
- Pennsylvania hills, fair weather - 18mpg on first tank, then back up to 20mpg.
- New Jersey and New York, fair weather, including idling in front of the Brooklyn tunnel for an hour - 16 mpg.
- Pennsylvania hills, absolutely nasty weather (very heavy rain) - 15mpg
- Ohio flatlands, light rain - 18 mpg.
This was all running at 1950 rpms (58-61 mph depending on incline), cruise control all the way throttling on uphills and engine braking on downhills, except NY of course. All in all I'd say pretty decent results, even tho truck was empty one way and lightly loaded with a bit less than half a ton on the way back.

I've peaked out at 22.5 average on one trip. Calculation was made by going 100 miles one way then 100 back the other. The numbers that day actually came close to 25 MPG one way, but I claim the ~22MPG numbers. Average speed was 70 MPH.
Maybe some day I will get a better injector pump and see if it makes any difference.

David just think if ya swapped out your front clip for the more aerodynamic 92-97 and sent your ol girl on a diet.
Blastphemy!
I actually have my doubts that the rounded front corners really make that big a difference. The windshild rake is the same, the stance is the same, the hood height might even be a little higher, the rear tailgate and windows are just as flat....I dunno, seems that the body changes in 1987 and later in 1992 had more to do with marketing than aerodynamics. A smooth belly pan from bumper to bumper might help though. I have wondered what the truck would do if I cruised at 55MPH instead of 70 but I'd probably die of boredom.
In reality anything with a box on the arse end will have terrible wind drag. I got those high numbers with the canopy off the truck and the tailgate up which helped to reduce the rear cross section and keep the trailing vortex small. As it is the truck already weighs about 6000lbs empty so I don't know how much lighter I can get it.
I do have plans to replace the doors, box fenders and maybe even hood with my own composite replacements, so maybe that would help a little. maybe? Knowing me, I would probably make them bomb proof instead haha. I'm more interested in rust immunity than weight savings.

your jelous of that milage? id be pissed! completey empty with my heavy flat bed/rear bumper combo ive pulled 28.7 mpg out of my truck before.
How exactly you achieved that? I have never ever heard of anyone getting over 25mpg, and anyone with 20+ mpg seems to be running a turbo - again, how in the world you pulled near 29 mpg with such a big and heavy truck, and tailwind and downhills don't count
