Smelling gas

Whenever I fill my 53 up, I smell gas until it I driven it for a while. Could this be that the seal on top of the tank for the sending unit needs replaced? The PO put carpet in but did not cut out the inspection plate for the gas tank like they did for the master cylinder. I need to cut that out, but thought I'd ask here to know what to look for.

It could be the gasket under the sending unit or a split in the rubber hose connecting the filler tube to the gas tank.

Sounds like the sending unit or the knuter valve attached to the sky hooks.

I found the hose where it connects to the tank was leaking. But I think the gasket on the sending unit is leaking some also. I will see how strong the smell is when I fill up again. Thanks for the replies. Thanks Stephen67 for the laugh. I need all I can get right now. I will probably be informed this coming Friday that my last day with SPRINT will be March 27.

Leak

Since you need to remove the filler tube to replace the rubber joint, you may want to consider welding a vent tube in the filler tube (top side)and running it down and out under and aft of the cab. Doing this, you can install a non-vent fuel cap. The rubber around the fuel cap between the tube and cab as it ages will cause fuel smell to enter cab sometimes.

Other topic: I retired from Sprint a few years ago. Working there is like a Boeing contract, up/down/up/down. Nextel was not a good merger. I wish you well. chuck

The vent tube and non-vented cap works really well. I did this on my 48 and I never smell gas fumes...
