Stolen Tailgate - Replacement ??

Had my tailgate stolen off my '06 F250 a couple of weeks ago while my truck was parked in front of my house. The body shop says insurance insists on replacing it with a used gate. The shop called me this morning to say they found a used gate for me off an F150. Their supplier insists the F150 gate is the same as an F-250 . . . . is this true?

Also . . . after reading up on the forums, I will definitely do the hose clamp mod and lock it in the future.

Thanks

Mark

Sucks. I always keep my locked. Sure it can still be stolen, but at least it makes them work for it. Also, try a cable tie on one or both sides of the hinge all in the name of making the criminals task that bit harder.

I put a hose clamp around the hinge that has the slot in it, and I keep mine locked as well.

Ditto on the hose clamp. I went one step farther by using a HD clamp (one without the little cuts where the threads screw next to it) and also tack welded the bolt that tightens it. While the thief is busy trying to figure out how to remove it, I'll have time to go inside and get my...

The insurance company may be insisting on a used tailgate, but if I were you, I'd be insisting on a new tailgate. It may depend on the state, but I'm pretty sure at least in this state, the insurance company is legally required to pay for the repairs to be done properly, by any company YOU choose, with new, OEM parts if YOU choose.

I live in a one red light town where everybody nows everybody I don't even lock the front and it has all My tools in it (oops sorry it is 2 red lights now) well atleast the ones I use everyday. Most of the time I leave My keys in it also. God help the person that tries to take something and I hear them. I just open the door and let My two girls out.(pit bulls) This day and time it is probably not the smartest thing to do but I have been doing it My whole life.

I'm in CA . . . I went to the body shop to check out the F-150 tailgate. It was of a 1999 F-150 so I told them I didn't want that going on my truck. Both the body shop guys and myself didn't feel that it looked right. They said the salvage company said it would fit but they also called Ford who said it wouldn't fit.

I will call the insurance rep (AAA) and let them know we need to go the "new" route. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for all the input on this.

Watch craigslist everyday, or contact some shops who sell campers and possibly truck bodys, and you will find a nice take off gate. Yes a 97-03 F150 gate is the same as a 99-07 superduty gate except for the emblem. Tail lights are the same also. Actually the rear bumper faceplate less reinforcement is the same too. I have a F250 gate on a 02 F150 pickup.
