OK, according to this site: Ford Ranger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

there are currently four different engines in the Rangers and the 3.0 is the Vulcan v6 and the 2.5 is an I4.

So, I looked up the engine codes and the Vulcan 3.0 is either a U or a V. Anyone know for sure which it is? My guess would be V for Vulcan. The 3.0 sounds like my kind of engine.

The ranger 3.0 is a vulcan. there was a 2.5 dohc V-6 used in the ford contour and a 3.0 dohc V-6 used in the taraus. The ranger 3.0 is a push rod vulcan V-6.

3.0 slow if you want some gas mileage and something that performs as well or better then the 3.0 then get the 4 banger either lima or d-tec. I think the 01's and later 2.3 are a bit more peppy than the lima. (my opinon only). You want performance then get the 4.0 but gas mileage suffers with that engine

3.0 V6 is called Vulcan. it is OHV endine

3.0DOHC made in Germany is called Durateq, but this is engine for cars and it was not used for Ranger ore Explorer.

There are 4 german engines used for Ranger - 4 cyl duratorq, 4.0 SOHC Cologne, 2.5 Duratorq and 3.0 Duratorq (diesel common rail engines, offered in EU). That is all.

3.0 - this is made in the USA old style engine.

Your ranger don't use all of the same engines we do. We have the 4.0 cologne, the 3.0 vulcan and the 2.3, 2.5 lima 4 cylinder and 2.3 duratec 4 cylinder.

I know that Duratorq is available in the USA for Transit and Transit Connect only. Crew cab is not available in the USA too. EU ranger has the same frame, but with crew cab it has shorter bed and other fuel tank. EEC-V used in EU differs a bit too, Other calibrations (Euro-III standard, electronically controlled TB), and k-line for diagnostics (it is like a J1708 protocol). It is not all, we have H4 headlamps ore H7/H1 headlamps, yellow tail dir. light (like aerostar had), small additional wight marker light bulb in headlamp and euoropean rims, bosch starter, ford tranny (made in Germany), and seems to me ZF t-case (not BW), and with manual tranny manual t-case is still available.

I have made in USA ranger with extended cab and 4.0 sohc. but I have made for EU ranger hood. It is made of steel, not of aluminium.

I'm looking for gas mileage in this case (2WD Ranger) and durability of the engine so the 3.0 Vulcan sounds like my best choice. I have three Explorers with the 4.0 OHV and they are all 4WD and that power is necessary for them. One has 280K miles and another has 220K miles and both needed new intake manifold gaskets but they still have their original head gaskets. Neither has needed any major work and they both still run great and easily pass the california smog test.

Do the Mazda B3000s use the same engines as the Rangers? There are not very many for sale but just in case....

i do not really see a reason to have B3000 and Ranger on one market........

yeah, we have no Windstar here, but Carnival (+ manual tranny is available).... but ranger and b3000 sharing many parts... really what a reason?

I had thought about 16 or 17 years ago that the Mazda Navajo was a cheaper version of the Explorer with fewer buttons to push and vinyl seats etc. But now when I search for a used B3000 they are generally asking more than for a comparable Ranger. Maybe the Mazda is now a more luxurious model kinda like the Explorer vs the Mountaineer.

If the Ranger and B3000 are made on the same assembly line does that mean the Rangers are actually made in USA? I have two Explorers that were made in Mexico and a F350 made in Canada.

Ranger, '99, 3.0, x-cab, 4x2
I never thought of my 3.0 as getting great mileage. Now I think it might be the extended cab and extra weight that's the culprit. In the winter there's sandbags in the bed but as soon as good weather arrives I carry nothing extra. The 3.0 is as reliable as they come though.

Also the later belts use a radiused tooth rather then square cut and last far beyond 60,000 miles. The one on my engine went 132 thousand and still looked good. kotzy

I'm not expecting "great" gas mileage with a 3.0 but better than a 4.0. And not as good as a 2.3. I have four Ford trucks right now and I've never gotten rid of one and the 3.0 sounds like the most durable small engine. Mine seem to last as long as you want to keep them (and keep fixing them).

If the I4 engines are aluminum with cast iron cylinder sleeves does that mean the spark plug holes are aluminum? Or do they have inserts too? Do they strip or sieze easily?
