83 wagon rear end?

Found a 83 ford wagon on craigs list would the rear end work? I can get the whole car for what the salvage yards want for an explorer rear end. I am guessing its the same as an 83 cv?

I would guess the rear end is the same width as the CV, however, I'd make certain it is an 8.8 and not a 7.5 That said, wagons usually got the "bigger" treatment anyway. Same as 1979-89? In older models, the wagon I think was a tad wider in all aspects. I'm assuming it's only a 28 spline drum rear also.

After thinking about it, I would expect it to be a 7.5"

This is an 8.8 Notice how big the housing is compared to the tubes. Tacson's pic is a bit harder to tell.

My drivetrain came out of 86 Country Squire (a wagon). I did not use that rearend but my was a 8.8. I got lucky and bought a 54 effie with a mopar 742 posi. Always could to have a whole complete car, booster, master cylinder, motor / trans, extra wiring. I would go for the car.

If I do this will be the third change in drivetrain plans! Started out with a 4.6 from an explorer got a good offer and parted ways with that. Got the fe and now this!

It is a 8.8. The car it came out of was a police model.

Don,

Just wanted to let you know about a cruise-in that is happening down in Athens, AL Exit 354, I65 March 7. They actually will be doing one the first Sat in every month down here. I have a funeral that I need to go to so I may not make this first one, but I will remind you when they hit.

If I had more horsepower thats what I would do, but the 8.8 would be great cause mine is just a cruiser and not a pavement ripper.

I have also notice that @ the local junkyards the 9 inchers are getting hard to find. Chevy people want them, drag racers, circle guys, and some 4x4 people also. I try to grab as many as can at a good price but that is even difficult

I run a 3.23 geared 742 mopar and the main reason is that I had it out from another effie and it has so far worked out great.

I guess to each his own, if we were all the same then it may not be quite as fun. One day if I can find a decent BB ford that cranks my tractor, I will have the nine out back.
