Replace power steering pump -- need directions

Searched FTE but didn't find anything...maybe using the wrong keywords.

Anyway, I'm guessing I need a new power steering pump. My 99 5.4 Expy makes a terrible gargling/grinding sound at low speed when turning (like into or out of a parking space). If there is another explanation, I'm happy to listen, but assuming I'm right...

How tough is it to change? Any pointers? Any special tools or techniques required?

Thanks.

I changed one on the old Aerostar once, and it wasn't too bad. There is a special puller type tool available that lets you remove the pulley so the pump can be removed. Been a while, but seems I bought it at AutoZone for under $20. Once you remove the pulley, it's not a difficult job. Your engne compartment layout may be a little more crowded, or maybe not.

It might also be the LSD clutches binding, and not the power steering. If you do have the LSD, the first step for that would be a fluid change.

As I've said before on this forum, I'm no gear-head. {General disclaimer in case my statement below is totally stupid.}

My truck is 2 wheel drive and this sound is in the front, so I'm guessing that LSD is either for 4WD or would be making noise in the back on a 2WD...?

Will also make noise if fluid level is low and pump is sucking air, so check the basics first.

Limited slip is an option on both 2wd and 4wd, and is common in cars too. It is a clutch package in the rear differential that does what the name implies - it limits wheel slip. If a wheel loses traction, the power is shifted to the wheel that has traction. In the old days it was called posi traction.
Although it is in the rear end, at times the noise can be heard and felt more forward. Have someone stand next to the car in a parking lot and make it grind - they should be able to tell you right away if it is coming from the front or back. Don't hit them - helpers hate being run over.

Sound is definitely in the front. Was dealing with unloading two kids last night, but popped the hood and had the wife turn the wheel while in park to make the sound. Only had a few seconds to look, but it seemed to be coming from way down low, in the region behind the drivers headlamp.

Edit: Also, when the sound started I checked the fluid. It was above the MIN mark, but barely. I topped it off, but didn't overfill.
