Removing Chrome from aluminum wheels

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove well adhered chrome from aluminum wheels? I have an old set of Cragers that I would like to clean up and paint or powder coat but some of the remaining chrome is so well adhered even sand blasting will not touch it. Would some type of acid like muritic remove it without eating the aluminum? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

Well if it's on that good I'd leave it there. Paint doesn't stick to chrome well, but that's because it has a super-smooth finish. The sand blaster should have fixed that. Powder coat is done with an electrical process, I don't forsee any problems there. If anything you'll need to smooth up the wheels a little to get a good finish. This would be a good time to blend any transition from the chromed areas to the aluminum. That'll keep it from looking like it has a step.
