94 4r70w forward clutch clearance

Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1994 2wd f150's 4r70w, and I'm running into clearance issues in the forward clutch pack.
This trans was rebuilt not too long ago by someone else, and when I disassembled it I noticed it was missing the wave plate in the forward clutch. I went ahead and ordered one, but with the wave plate, the 5 additional frictions/steels, and the upper plate, the clearance is way too tight. Can't fit any size feeler.
With no wave plate the clearance is ~.150", seems too loose to ignore to me (obviously out of spec)
I was hoping someone may be able to provide some insight.
Thanks guys!
-Lukas

After much more searching, I've determined that the pre 96 forward clutch drums are shorter than the later models, and the wave plate I have is for the deeper late model drums. The pre96 actually have a .039" wave plate that would bring the clearance into spec. I can't find a part number for the thinner wave plate, let alone a source to buy one, so I will omit it and and likely add another steel to bring the clutch pack into clearance.

Are you sure the drums are different lengths between the years? I'm not doubting you, it's just that I had a similar problem when I rebuilt my 4R70W, a 1996 model. I had the same problem where I had no clearance, and I ended up sourcing an older 0.039" from a pre '96 model to bring it within spec. In all my research I did not come across where the drums are different lengths.

The part number for the older, 0.039" wave plate is 76853B. The Ford part number is FOSZ-7E085-A. There's some NOS on eBay right not here:

Thanks for that link! I couldn't for the life of me find the p/n.
As for the drum lengths, I read about the change here. Second paragraph talks about the increased distance between the piston and snap ring groove. I don't know if the drum is externally any longer, but internally the piston and ring groove are farther apart.
Thanks again for the information!

Cool thanks. That makes sense and thanks for your link! It’s hard to keep straight what changes were made with these transmissions as Ford mixed it up a lot. Although I must say the heavy duty E4OD/4R100 is way worse in that regards!

Good luck with your build.
