dang so much information in this thread!! it's also nice to see people having an inteligent conversation as apposed to arguing about what's rice and what not... lol coughhondatechcough. any ways so the more you guys post in here the more confident i get. just to clarify a few things though, do i have to replace ALL of my o rings if I'm repairing and converting from r12-r134a? my friend just got a 30 gallon compressor so i might attempt to tackle this myself.

The short answer is YES.
It doesn't have anything to do with compatibility, though. The newest R12 system is now 16 years old, and so are the orings. It only takes one of them to fail next month to ruin your day. For about $10, it's cheap insurance against future leaks. Although the old BNR (black) orings are fine with R134a, the new HBNR (green) orings seal a bit better.

Aww, you don't need all of that old, expensive, hard to fix AC crap in the way and adding weight. I'll bet the PO got .001 more horsepower when he took it off.

When you refer to the "green" O-rings, are you talking about the opaque, light green, or the near-transparent bright green? I've seen them both in the yards.
I'm about to tackle flushing and servicing my dual AC system, and have a couple of questions.
First, if I stay with R12 type refrigerant, what type of orifice tube should I be using in the front and back? Both the brown colored version?
Second, I'm almost certain I have to replace my compressor; it definitely made some grinding type noises the last time I heard it run. How do I identify the FX-15 vs FS-10 compressors? Do they have different stamping numbers on them?
The napa cataloging for mine was the orange one and the a/c has been working good since early spring when I replaced a ton of a/c stuff.I have a thread with tons of great info. floating around this board.I can find you the part # if you need. Also I wouldn't be surprised if different manufactures call for diff. colors who knows?
Good luck

I was wondering if the color codes were universal among the different makers. Also, is you system R12 or converted to R134?

I'm not sure how to tell the difference between those 2 compressors, but try giving a call to 1-800-radiator. If u can't get an answer just replace the compressor for a new FS-10.

I can tell them apart by looking, but I can't describe what is different between the two. They just "look" a bit different.
Any good replacement compressor will be an FS-10. I don't know of any reputable rebuilder that will even offer an FX-15.

Ford bounced around between the orange and red otubes on the Aerostar dual systems trying for better performance from the rear unit. The rear Aero units were marginal at best when new. I generally use the red tube in them.
That is definately one system that doesn't convert well to R134a. Those systems struggled even with R12 due to the small condenser and the use of a fixed orifice instead of an expansion valve.

xlt,
depending on your driving conditions, you may want to research VOV aka automatic adjusting orifice tubes, avail from RockAuto and other auto a/c parts supplies.
