I was flipping through a copy of Truckin' magazine and saw that there are dealers that have replacements for the rear taillights that instead of a single bulb are in fact a cluster of LED's. They claim that they are brighter and so forth.
I have also seen for sale halogen (no kidding) back-up and taillight bulbs in the performance products mail order catalog.
Any comments on these? I have a F-350 Crew Cab Dually and my Wife should be getting a new Expedition soon as well and if they really are brighter, longer lasting, and so on I am interested in purchasing them for our trucks.
Tripp, I do not have any experience with the halogen lights but I have upgraded to the LED bulbs. I my opinion the LED bulbs are definatley worth the money, much brighter( especially in daylight), and they have a much longer life(very little heat). I've also noticed that tractor trailer units, and buses are starting to use these so obviously it's got to be more of a safety mod than just appearence.

The halogen backup bulbs are brighter than stock, but they really don't add much because the factory lenses and reflectors are such crap. If you want real backup lights go with an auxiliary set. They can be had at a truck equipment dealer (think tow truck) or at a sports car rallye equipment dealer. Good prices, advice and service at: http://catalog.com/susq/index.htm
I have noticed the LEDs in traffic lights, UPS/FEDEX trucks, tractor trailors, ect. One thing about LEDs is the use very little electrical power. They are making police/fire lights using LEDs. The fire company that I belong to has a LED arrow stick on the back of our new truck. It uses less than 1.9 (I think) amps. A regular light stick uses from 5-15 amps! big difference!

Xaviar, the LED bulbs that I have are red and are designed to be used in clear lights. They just fit into a standard 1157 socket, I'm not sure how the red bulbs would work in red/OEM lenses but someone must be making clear ones by now. I bought mine from APC. http://www.4apc.net
