This is all very reassuring. My '02 X is turning over the 100,000 mile mark this month sometime. I was cruising the forum looking for suggestions on when to do major service, like replacing the timing belt. However, based on this thread, I think I won't worry too much about that for a while longer.

I do need to do plugs. I bought it used, so I'm not sure if they're original or not. Bought it at 46,000 miles, so original or not, it's time...or beyond time. I'm just afraid of those stupid threads. Oh well. Guess I'll just be super careful and buy a good torque wrench!

I have a 2005 F250 crew cab 4x4 short box with a V10 and have 17,000 miles on it. Just bought it a couple months ago. The father-in-law has a 2006 F450 V10 and a 2008 F450 V10 that he uses as his work trucks for his excavation business. He hauls bobcats and bobcat mini excavators all over Montana for jobs and not a complaint!

Not sure replacing the timing chains with timing belts would be much of an improvement.....?

I am assuming you're talking about my post. As I stated, I'm here to figure out what I need to do. If I don't know what needs to be done, I also don't know if it's a belt or a chain. I am early on in figuring all this out. For example, I know enough to know that I need a good in/lbs torque wrench before doing plugs. See, I can be taught! Next is to figure out what plugs to use. Then what I need to do to service the tranny, etc. etc. etc.

The Ford modulars use a real roller CHAIN. Not a belt. They do not need regular maintenance and will last the lifetime of the engine if you change the oil regularly.

The only thing that might happen is the guides wear, or the tensioner wears, but again, regular oil changes make that unnecessary.

Can't drive it as much...

...because it won't fit in the garage where I've worked for the last year, so my 2003 E350 only has 134K on it. Those are mostly highway miles clocked during the first three years after it was purchased with 26K in JAN04. When I do get to drive it (weekends for chores and day trips), I allow myself one "V10 moment" per day. It will still, easily, accelerate to [REDACTED TO PREVENT PROSECUTION], surprising whatever other brand (usually Dodges, I hate Dodges) I care to show up.

It is past time! You are lucky you haven't blown out any plugs. I blew out one on my '02 at about 45,000 miles.

I've got 167k miles on mine. I've put 23k miles of heavy towing on it THIS year already. Original plugs made it to 155k miles and looked ok when I took them out. Not a single non-maintanance repair bill so far.

Here's an example of what I tow daily:
