Programmer as the first mod?

Programmer as the first mod?
No, I don't have a 7.3 yet but I can't help and look at all the goodies available for the 7.3.
I searched around in some of the mod forums but didn't seem to find what I was looking for.
I was thinking that for my 7k mile road trip to Alaska, it might not be a bad idea to go ahead and maybe get some gauges and perhaps even a programmer since they seem to be very useful things.
I figure this would help me get a good bump in MPG and would help to pay itself off as I drove across the country.
I would eventually do the exhaust and intake as I have read about those all over the forum, but I figured the programmer was perhaps the best one to start with considering my situation.
Would anyone agree or disagree?

Best thing to do would be to do the Exhaust (straight pipe for cheap) and then do a 6637 mod (35-40 dollars all said and done) then if you tow anny going up there a good set of gauges (boost, tranny, and pryo) from a local member and sponsor Riffraff Performance just send him a PM.
Then you can look at a programmer/chip. If you cheap you can get used Superchips, edge systems for a decent deal. But if they are over 200 dollars your better off getting a DP-Tuner (DP-Tuner) or a Tony Wildman Chip ( www.totaldieselperformance.com) just to get you started. But with you being right in Atlanta I would look up Jody at DP-Tuner since he is located in Atlanta.

I agree with what Justin said, I would also do your exhaust and intake right now. You can do both of them fairly cheaply. The exhaust will help lower your EGT's some and your truck will love all the air it will get with the 6637.
The 7.3 section is full of very knowledgeable people, post up and questions you may have and they will take care of you! When you do find "your" truck be sure to post up pictures.

If I can get those done for under 100 bucks then I might be able to get all of that and a programmer done before I leave for Alaska.
