Powerstroke burning oil?

Hey guys, couple of questions here. I just bought a 06 lcf with a 4.5 liter powerstroke. I really dont see much on this engine in these forums. From what i hear its very similar to the 6.0. I just bought the truck from the dealership with 13000 miles on it and it now has 16000.
They told me that they changed the oil but it was jet black and it looked like crap. I just changed it today and it was 6 quarts low. No visable oil leaks in the driveway or nothing. I have driven it 3000 miles like this with out even realising it. Could it be burning oil? do diesels burn oil normally? Do you think that i might have done damage? Im fed up with this dealer......
