Question Suggestions for a donor fuel tank for my 52

Hello Everyone.

I'm looking to fit my 52 M1 with a between the frame rails fuel tank.
Anyone found a donor tank that fits, even if it means a few minor modifications?

Thanks Guys

Stu

Do a search of this site for "tank" or "mustange" you'll find numerous post about this subject. Also check out the post at the top of the main '48-60 board:

Just to more add on to what Bob was saying, the specific link to the gas tank (and the one I used when installing mine) is https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...1953_F100.html

Hey Stu, .. OK......so far so good, you have been told to do a search and probably come with the mustang tank at maybe $ 125.00, now here is the real question, what about the gas gauge sending unit, it is calibrated in ohms (Please do another search, “fuel sending units / gas gauges” ..........great info there) that do not (necessarily) match your dash gauge, so your options are to pee around with resistors to get it to match, try and fit the aftermarket sender or original truck sender to the original tank sending unit, cut a new hole in your tank for the aftermarket sender, or buy a aftermarket tank WITH correct sender hole, and save hours of pleasurable stress and spend more money.

Always a balancing act,……….. and one that I have not made yet? .......................What are you going to do?

Lately, I've been looking at a full size chev pickup tank turned sideways so the filler comes out the back.

Thank you.
Handn't taken the fuel sending unit issues into account so big thanks for the heads' up, Old F1. Thought about having a filler in the left rear fender, hidden behind a door.
Anybody tried that with much success?
Keep those tricks and tips coming, Guys. You have been a huge help in all my questions. This is a fantastic website for first-timers, like me. The best.

If you want a little more range than the Mustang tank allows, some have used tanks from chebby vans and I have installed one from a 88 Bronco II. (23 gallon) Check my gallery for pics.

The tank looks like a good fit. Got any pictures of where it comes out of the fender or bed.

I used a Mustang tank in my 52 using what others had documented. I put my fuel filler in the DS rear fender. There are some pictures in my Gallery.

After all my fuel problems I had, I would suggest a poly tank from Summit, Jegs, etc. No rust to worry about. Nearly all drop in sending units for aftermarket gauges would work and you can just strap her in. If you do use a stang tank make sure you line it first so it doesn't rust which usually drives the cost of the tank up. I went through two tanks and 5 fuel pumps to learn the hard way. Good luck.

I have installed a 1974 GMC 4X4 saddle tank between my rails.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...210102&width=1

It still give clearance between drive shaft after install. Thinking about installing a safety ring for the drive shaft.

My original tank had a leak line around 3/4 full, then the cab smelled of gas.

I'm using a tank from a 73 Chevy blazer, will fit between the frame rails no problem as both the chevy and ford measures 34 inches. I just modified the filler tube to suit my needs. I haven't bought my gauges yet so shouldn't have much problems matching a sending unit. I searched www.gastanks.com to get measurements and decided from that.

A buddy of mine here in town is building a 48 truck and used a poly fuel cell, looks great and fits nice. He is going to put the filler up through the center of the wood floor. The one he is using is a 14 gallon but if he can get 10 mpg that 140 miles and by that time you would be ready to stop and get out stretch anyway.
