how are these tranny's holding up

I have a 2001 supercrew with 5.4, 4x4. I have 160K on the truck now and tranny is still strong. Overall how are these holding up?

Ive never really heard of a lot of problems with the automatics, the 5-speed manuals have some issues though.

If you take care of them and don't over-rev them they will last you a long, long time.

Only problems I have heard are towing related. I think I am going to install the Factory Tech Valve Body kit in mine. I tow my boat and a camper once in awhile so I figured it might help.

Just a suggestion...

Call Troyer Performance at 540-965-7126 for your valve body instead. He offers a superior product and the cost isn't stupid for what you get. Actually you can't find better for your money than what they sell. Tell them I referred you if you call.

But for a real fix for the overdrive issues there is more that needs to be done. The stock overdrive band is an issue all in itself and the overdrive servo has a tendency to leak around the servo pin. There are fixes available, but they involve more intensive transmission work.

I had a retainer ring come out on my overdrive pack and cause it to lock up the over drive. I drove the truck for another 300 miles before i finally pulled the tranny out. Even drove it into my shop. It had 130k on it then. I bought a used tranny with 120k on it and now i have 190k on my truck with zero issues.

I tow some pretty heavy loads, including my boat to the ozarks. The 4r70w is a good transmission and if you are lucky enough to have the 4r100 then. Well ... Damn you....hahaha.

Hey guys , what's an easy way to indentify the two different trannys? I'll look into Troyer.
Thanks for the info!

How many transmission pan bolts are there? My bet is 14 and that means a 4R70W. In that case definitely call Troyer.

But, if it does have the 4R100 then go with a factory tech kit because it's likely the best you will find for your money on that one. For God's sake don't call Troyer asking for factory tech though. LOL

I'll check tomarrow when I get to the shop on the pan bolts.

I've got a 2001 with 140k and have had no transmission issues to speak of. Running strong and looking for many more miles.
