Question Transmission question

I'm asking this for a guy at work. He has a 2001 F-350 psd. his tranny just went out this week and the guy at the shop said that if you leave these diesel diesel in park at idle for extended periods of time it will burn up the tranny. he said you're supposed to put them in neutral not park if you're leaving it idle for a long time.

So the guy at work wants to know if thier is any truth to this becuase if its true than it took five years for it to ruin the transmission.

Also does a 2001 have an E4OD or a 4R100 becuase i want to know if this applies to my OBS PSD with the E4OD in it.

Thanks in advance.

There is a vague amount of truth to it. There is more circulation when in nuetral than in park, but, the only advantage is if the transmission was really hot to begin with, pushing more fluid through the cooler will help it cool faster. But simply idling in park or N will not burn the trans up.

So unless the transmisson is hot their is no reason to leave in nuetral, park is fine.

So is that the same transmission as the one in my 96 (E4OD) or does a 2001 have a 4R100?

I was under the impression that the only difference between park and neutral was the park pawl was either engaged or not. Where did you all hear about flow differences?? Hopefully Mark K. can pop in and confirm...

There is NO difference in neutral and park. The fluid flow is exactly the same. It makes no difference to anything except the truck rolling being in park or neutral.

So what was said above and by the guy at the shop was wrong. if you've got that much experiance with AT then i am more inclined to believe you.
