What may be my high engine oil temp?
running Shell Rotella T synthetic
sender at filter location.
I am thinking about installing a sender at the HPOP and doing a toggle switch.
The reason I plumbed mine into the HPOP is because that is what the PCM sees. The PCM adjusts the fueling tables when the oil is up to temp.

If you have a tuner on your truck it is a good idea not to go romping on the pedal when the oil is cold, wait for the oil to come up to temp before playing hard, or towing. The cylinder pressures can get out of hand when the oil is cold and performance tuning is applied.

I really love to pull up old threads. I've been using Torque Pro to closely watch the truck. With that data, questions arise.

Yesterday it was 76* out and I had a nice long drive in the truck which gave me time to check sustained engine oil temp (EOT). Running down the road at. 70-75mph, torque was reporting 215-220*. It hit a max of 230* and with a 2-5 min idle would drop down to 208*.

From reading this thread, that seems warm compared to the 180-190 other reported back in 2009. I'm running a stock thermostat with Cat ELC.

I have an alarm set to go off at 250*, and I'm not in the heat of Oklahoma's summer. Is this gonna be an issue?

Thanks, I like to pull up old threads instead of starting new.

I'm modded pretty heavy, and I run about 185-190. Almost everything on the truck is new, except for the block. I know of one truck that rides about 205-210, but that's while towing.

I was just wondering the same thing ! I never really paid much attention to the EOT but over the winter i changed a PID on my monitor to read it. The reading has to be coming from the sensor on the HPOP because I'm using a edge evolution monitor for my gauges and it plugs into the OBDII port.
Last week i was in the same boat here in North FL. It was about 75* 80* and my EOT were running around 220*. That was mild driving 45 to 55 and some stretches of 65 to 70. I will try to take better note next few outings to be more accurate.
I think I'm running a hotter T-Stat than stock but can't verify that for sure, but i do agree with you from the posts back in 09 seeing under 200 in hot weather towing light loads or HWY driving has me concerned. Might be time for some oil cooler R&R

Really the only two things i could think of would be Radiator T-Stat and Oil cooler.

For me my Rad is 2 or 3 years old. Coolant filter is semi fresh (new) and T-Stat well like i said ummmm not sure if its a 205 or a 195. Im pretty sure its a 205 if so i could see the EOT rising much higher but would have to have others verify there temps along side what T-Stat they are running.
As for my oil cooler wellllll UMMMMMM its never been touched !!!!! But i will be pulling it off soon for some R&R but dreading it !!!

It just lets me know that although my truck runs great there is something not right under the hood. I just rebuilt the oil cooler due to a leak, the water pump was replaced due to the weep hole, coolant flushed with CAT ELC, oil replaced with fresh Delo 400.

I've done just about all I can do aside from a new motor. It just doesn't fit in the "normal" bucket.

Herd that on the "normal" bucket.
What T-Stat you running ? After Idling for a few and i coming back down to 208 sounds like you have a 205* stat. If running a 195 i could see EOTs in the 200 to 210 range being normal. Now add 10 to that for your 205 and that makes sense.
But like i said i would like to get numbers from the 195 guys and the 205 guys with different ambient temps and situations like speeds loaded and unloaded

I'm running all OEM ford parts so the 195 t-stat. I pull my data through torque pro or AE through the PCM.

Guys.... seeing oil temps hit 220's, 230's is perfectly normal. I've lost count of how many trucks I've data logged, and it's happened frequently.

I appreciate your input. This is my first PSD and I'm my only reference for data points. I rely on FTE to verify my findings.

Thanks for that - I suspect you've data-logged more than I have, and not all of mine have the EOT in the file.

I will say this about the 205: Is this an inexpensive mod to get a bump in performance? Do you really feel a difference? I know there's the theory of the combustion cycle improving with a warmer cylinder, and the injectors will have a quicker response - advancing the timing a tiny bit. These truck do fine with the stock T-stat... and it's better for the oil. I wonder how many warm no-starts can be attributed to hotter (or cooked) oil.

School, eh? My wife and I chuckled. She said "They've got your number."

Considering I run the stock T-Stat, I still wanna know why my EOT is about 30* above others.

What is your formula? I have the luxury of owning AE and a few other OBDII scan tools (for my tablet), to confirm the formulas.
