Looking for info

Hi......my first post.
I just bought a 1999 F350 4X4 that needs a motor.
I has a 5.4 Triton in it that dropped a valve, and ruined the cam.
It has 170 miles on it and has been tore down, so I think the easiest thing to do is replace the whole thing.
I'm new to the newer Fords and would like to know, what are my options?
From what I've read these 5.4's seem to be year specific, what years will drop in and everything plug in? It was manufactured 01/98.
What would have to be done to put a newer motor in it? Computer change ?
All wiring?

I'm sure I'll have many more questions.
Thanks Bruce

As long as you use a 99-04 5.4L I think you can drop it and plug it in. I believe 05 was when the superduties got the 3v 5.4L engines and that would take a new computer and harness to run it.

01/98? Isn't that January '98? That would make it a '98. '99s were not produced until the later part of '98. Say around 09/98 and later.

No, that's a '99. Ford did not make any '98s. A truck manufactured in January, 1998 was called a 1999 model.

Ahhhhh....that explains the year differance, the permit says 99
but I thought 01/98 was a bit early to be building 99's.
So why are the auto recyclers wanting to know the manufacure date is there a differance between the early 99 5.4's vs the later 5.4's ?

I believe all 2v superduty 5.4L are the same. There might be a PI and Non-PI head 5.4L, but work with the 2000-04 and you should have a PI 2v 5.4L engine that set right in with no special work.

PI= Performance Improvement. I think non-PI was all phased out in 99. 2v vs 3v references the number of valves in the head. The 2v is the basic upto 05 mod motor head. The 3v had variable timing and requires a different computer to run the adjuster.

There were a few differences between the early and late 99 models, but I believe they were mostly with the front suspension. They are asking though because the database they are looking in probably asks, but it really shouldn't matter for your issues.

We should clarify that a little. Ford didn't make any 1998 F350s. They did make the strange duck F250 Light Duty, that shared the same body style as the 1998 F150 but had beefed up suspension and drivetrain components.
