My clutch...What size?

Hello all. I just bought a new house and I finally have a garage and a paved driveway! It's a one car garage, but it's got plenty of room for the '48.

I'm inclined to do my clutch now (this spring?), rather than put it off or have it done somewhere. It chatters quite a bit, and I haven't had it on the road to know if it's slipping or not yet. I had grand visions of doing a T-5 swap, but I don't really want to have the truck off the road any longer than I have to, and to be honest, the idea of double clutching is kind of exciting.

The truck is an F-1 with the granny four speed. I assumed the 4-speed uses the bigger 11" clutch, but I just wanted to double check with you all.

Thanks.

It's likely a 10" rather than an 11" as I believe that was standard equipment on the 1/2 ton and there was no other options for it in 1948.

I would have assumed it's an 11" with the spur gear 4-sp, but the parts manual is unclear about that. It's likely you could use either, and if so, I would use the 10" unless I were going to do a lot of heavy work.

I believe I read that the flywheel would have to be re-drilled if you switch clutch sizes. I guess I might just do it the hard way and take the thing apart and check the part numbers...Maybe this project can wait a little while

From the 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog.

1948/52 F1 with the H/D 3 Speed or 4 Speed = 11" clutch.

C5TZ-7550-D replaced: 81T-7550 .. Clutch Disc

COTT-7563-A replaced: B7Y-7563-A .. Pressure Plate.
-----------------------------------------------------
1948/52 F1 with the L/D 3 speed = 10" clutch.

There is no 4 speed listed in the catalog with an 10" clutch for any year.
