could anyone post a link to the process for re-torquing the injector hold downs and rocker boxes? i cannot remember the numbers and cannot find the thread i read when i did mine. i am trying to print it for a friend of mine as he would like to do his tomorrow. thanks in advance for any replies!!

Robin, not to hijack this thread but where are the glowplugs in that picture? I have to replace #7 and was going to re-torque everything, great picture and timing.

The white wires of the UVCH go to the GPs and they are just to the right of the injector connector. Can't really see them in that pic.

Here is a pic by Dan (Kwikkordead) that shows the GP connector connected to top of GP. Make sure your's aren't rubbing on the push rod like in this pic. That wire eventually shorted out on the push rod when the insulation wore away.

 

10 foot pounds isnt nearly enough, usually they seat, and a few hundred miles they "seat in" and loosen up a little. Get the collar down over the top bolt, use a man's hand or a rubber mallet to get the injector seated, start the bottom bolt, a few smacks on the top with a rubber mallet, tighten it down tight with a 1/4" ratchet, then smack it some more with the rubber mallet, and recheck with a torque wrench, should be AT LEAST 10 lbs on it.

 

Glow plug torque? Not to many mentions on it.
Found 14foot pounds on the 1997 forums. Same on ours?

I have read 14 NM which equals about 124 in/lbs. I have also read 14 ft/lbs which equals 168 in/lbs. Anybody have a sure answer to this. I used 124 in/lbs when I replaced my GPs last Sep. No problems yet.

I always put the glow plugs to 10-15lb-ft. Just snug and a little more basically.

 

Good show Bob . Now the next time I'm under those VCs I will retorque the GPs as well as everything else.

 

The guys at Swamps recommend injector to be as tight as you can get it with a standard 1/4 drive ratchet. They said they have seen more loose injectors from using a torque wrench. If its good enough for the injector builders its good enough for me!

 

I'll bet you $50 I can break one of those little bolts with just a 1/4" drive (we'll try this on your truck)

I don't doubt they've seen many loose injectors. That's why we're such a fan of re-torquing them. I've seen and read about how too much torque can have a negative affect on o-rings. Don't know if that holds true for the injector o-rings as well, but it's something to keep in mind.
