Regular 4x4?
If you're in 4H the front and rear axles are locked together and when the wheels turn at different speeds something has to slip and bang. Usually a tire on the pavement but the shock runs back to the axles and truck.
In 4Auto the front axle can make a bang as it engages if the rears slip. This happens as the slack in the drive train is taken up.

I went out the other day after reading your post. I put the car in 4H & 4A on a freshly snow covered street, I excelerated, stopped. Put the car in park. excelerated again. I did not turn hard during any of this. In 4H or 4L I know the car will grunt and groan during sharp turns. I did not hear any banging or thunking.
