Off Topic- DOT numbers question

My dad owns his own business and I work for him and alot of friends ask us why we don't have DOT numbers on our company vehicles. Our work trucks are pretty much E-350 and E-450 duallys with utility backs, all of them a little different lengths and heights.
We don't pull in weigh stations on the high ways (we cover 8 different states) and never had a problem with authorites but I'm just wondering, what makes you need DOT numbers????

If it matters they all got commercial plates.

it thought only if you were transporting for someone else? it also depends on states. because Ohio the speed trap state had signs up every weigh station that "trucks over 4 tons empty" had to stop at weigh station.

MC #'s are for transport
all commercial vehicles dont have to have DOT #'s unless they also carry MC...there is a weight.....
If you are driving a escort transporting an envelope for pay "legally" you need DOT and MC #s
