IMO $1000 to make the repair is cheap given the amount of work to pull the tranny.

Well since you bought tons off vehicles from them. A little negotiation is in order. Just say your done buying vehicles here if you are not satisfied. I dont think dealers can afford to lose any business right now. There hurting as it is.

Cheap...NO,not hardly.
I pulled mine BY MYSELF in less than 3 hours using only hand tools.
Teardown, replacement of the parts and reassembly will take 2-3 hours total, and reinstallation will be 2-3 hours.

Might have misread the post. $800 parts + $1000 labor = $1800 which sounds a bit high. I paid $4200 for totally remove and replace with updated transmission and all new drive shafts and joints front to rear on 4wd. So $1800 is a bit on the steep side.

Given my dealer charges $100/hr 4 to 6 hrs R&R would be in the $600+ range for just labor + parts so the $1000 seems to be in the range for the repair.

Cheap might be the wrong word as nothing is cheap today,, but $1000 might be about right for the labor and parts.

They're ripping him on the parts as well. The case is $600,and the snap ring kit is $40.

That is why I purchased the extended warrentee for $50 when I bought my truck. I have an additional 3yrs on powertrain. $50 was a no brainer to transfer the warrentee from the first owner to me.

I do the same thing when I buy new,, but my 7.3 came off ebay.

I bought it $5000 under book and even after spending $5000 I have a new tranny, driveline, tires brakes, seats and a better truck. But as you say no warranty.

I would try to negotiate with Ford before having the work done. My BIL had the same problem with a cracked tranny two years ago and Ford stepped up to the plate and payed for half of it. Turns out the crack was a factory defect. This truck was almost 3yrs out of warranty. It won't hurt to try, and the worst that can happen is that they deny it.

Good Luck!!!

Dealer is offering to pick up 1/3 of cost - I started a file with Ford they said they'll determine after they get the info from the dealer. If Ford would even pick up an additional 1/3 I'd be happy. Goes in on Monday.

Will this be total tranny or just R&R case?

I'm not currently experiencing any issues but don't want to have an issue in the future... How difficult and expensive would it be to replace the snap ring only? I would rather spend a little $ now knowing I will save a lot $$$ down the road... no pun intended.

That estimate on mine was for the case, snap ring and labor only. The dealer says a new tranny will be around $4000. The build date on my tranny was 9/04, if yours is anywhere around that, I would look into getting it changed before you get into my problems. I saw a thread by Johhny Langton with great pics when he tackled his. I like working on my own outfits but auto trannies scare the hell out of me.

Tranny case broken

My hubby's 2005 F250 with 6L diesel has been a great truck- until now.
Like some other people on this forum, we spotted a mysterious red puddle under the truck only to find a large chunk of tranny case missing above the cooler line when we inspected it with a mirror. (I took a pic if anyone wants to see it)
I've never seen or heard of a transmission failing this way. Sure, you expect internal soft parts to wear and fail. Not the tranny case, though. I would definitely call this a defect in manufacturing.
Since our truck isn't fitted with the plowing package mentioned, we never received the notice of the customer satisfaction bulletin on the aforementioned clip. I guess Ford figured we'd be well out of warranty before it would wear out and punch a hole in normal use situations...
My question is why aren't enough people calling Ford to the carpet on this? I realize that our truck is out of warranty, but I think 79K miles seems low for a "Super Duty." Given all of the issues with the 6 liter diesel engine, I would think Ford would step up and address this issue and avoid further damage to their reputation (letting the customer satisfaction bulletin expire on this tranny issue is ludicrous, as is only sending it to plow package truck owners!) What happened to "quality is Job #1"????
We called the local dealer only to be given a "too bad, so sad" answer attached to a $4K estimate over the phone.
We are going to buy a remanufactured tranny and install it ourselves (nothing but bad things seems to happen when we let other people work on our vehicles.)
My husband is trying to get in touch with someone at Ford right now. They don't really make it easy to contact them directly, do they?
Ford should own up and reimburse people who have had this issue.

unfortunately i can't see you getting any help on this from ford. i suspect fords thinking was that plow trucks do much more forwards reverse shifting than normal usage. they most likely figured it would very rarely occur in normal operation. doesn't provide you much comfort when you lose the lottery though. just due to their back and forth and prob shifting forwards reverse while still moving plowing seemed to be the common denominator

I would expect nothing from Ford, How if it were really a tough transmission for a diesel it probably would not have failed. Just open your wallet.

I paid about $4800 for a upgrade tranny on my 7.3

BTW get rid of your air to water intercooler, It will cost you an engine.
