I am thinking about purchaisng an F150 that runs on propane. I know Roush makes an F150 that runs on propane but my local Ford dealer isn't an authorized Roush dealer. Are there any conversion kits out there that I could put an a new F150 to make it run on propane.

 

Any truck can be converted.
Talk to a large propane supplier in your area if they dont do the conversion they will know who does.

This guy knows a lot, might be of interest to you. I bought his ebook and liked it, but propane is hard to do in my area. He posts often on that forum I linked.

 

I was thinking about switching to propane because I put a lot of miles on my truck during the year, approximatley 40,000. Has anyone used propane on their daily driver. Is it a reliable alternative for someone who puts that many miles on in a year.

 

i know this is an older post,but if your still interested.i have propane injection on my 74 f350 4x4 dually. it was my daily driver for over 12 years.i averaged 60 miles a day on her. i have a 428 super cobra jet engine in the truck. it is rated at 428 rear wheel horsepower. my engine was new when it was put on propane. the compression ratio is 12 to 1.its a rollerized top end, steel forged crank, balanced rotating assembly, etc. i run an msd ignition box,msd coil,aurora 9 mm plug wires, hand built cold air induction, big tube headers,3 inch true dual exhaust with dual 5 inch tail pipes. it also has an auxillery electric fan for cooling ,in traffic when needed. the truck only gets 4 miles per gallon, the truck weight 6600lbs empty. it has tons of horsepower/torque. it is retired from daily use now but it never let me down when it pulled duty before. it didn't really like the idling in traffic much with the big lift and duration cam shaft,thats why the extra fan was added. other than that,it was fine. propane works really good on high compression engines. its not as good on low compression,or "tired", worn out engines.

 

You can find kits anywhere. Running engines on propane has been around for a long long time. My grandfather took a 1957 Chevy school bus and converted it into an RV. He also rebuilt the engine and converted it to run on either propane or gasoline with a flip of a switch. That old bus ran all over the lower 48 states, Canada, and Mexico, from 1967 until he parked it for good in 1990, all on the same engine.

FWIW, it ran better on propane then it ever did on gasoline. Whenever he would switch from pane to gas, the engine would sputter and backfire, finally catch, and just chug along.

 

a dual fuel system (gas -propane)is less desirable than a propane only system. to run dual fuel,you need a distributor curve adjustment kit . if you run on propane the timing is a different advance setting than on gas. so your timing is advanced more on propane. if you try to run gas or propane on the same timing setting for both,you will not get a peak setting on either. the gas will have too much timing,causing predetination(pinging),and if you retard the timing to stop pinging on gas,then the propane wont run efficiant.propane needs more advance. in my case i took all the gas lines,fuel tank,everything off the truck related to gasoline. pocket, your grandfathers rv ran better on the propane because of this.the propane burns hotter,burns cleaner, and helps keep the engine cleaner internally too. you are right,there are lots of kits to convert to propane.i recommend a total propane system over a dual fuel system. they are less complicated,and work much better.my truck has always ran great on propane.i would never go to gas on the truck again.

 

My truck the 150 runs on duel fuel and I really dont have any complaints what so ever. Hell if I go wheelin I switch over to gas as it seems that gas has more get up and go. We took the truck last year all over Alberta and ran mostly on propane. Real decent mpg. When I start my build Im thinking of just leaving the duel fuel in it. If I was to change it iId go all propane but soupe up the motor a bit more. Shes got a 4.9 ( 300 ) I -6

 

arctic wolf, the reason you are finding differences in the way your truck runs on gas or propane is because ,as i mentioned earlier, you run a dual fuel system. there is nothing wrong with them,but a total propane system does work better. this is my experience too. thats why i run a propane only system. both systems work, but i preffer a propane only set up. my truck is far from a stock engine. so for me this works extremely well. the only draw back for me is, i have to find a propane station . sometimes that can be a challenge. its okay in town,but travelling far away means fueling up more often so i don't have to worry about running out of propane. it's not too big of a deal,but it's one thing to consider.

I agree with you about having to try and find a propane station. Sometimes it can be a real bitch. I found last summer while out on vacation that most of the propane stations close shut there pumps down around 11:30 - 12 mid. I sure was glad that I had the gas in the tank to keep on going to the next town man. Maybe if I had two propane tanks it may have been better. Or maybe perhaps a bigger tank. But I really dont like having huge tanks in the back of my truck because it cuts down on the room in the box of a normal pickup. I think maybe if I can find a tank that ll fit were the side fuel tank went then maybe Ill just run propane but with only a 100 litre tank you really dont get too far.

 

Autogas or Superior Cardlock is the way to go for 24hrs service!

 

That is if youve got good credit you can get a card.. Myself my credit is crap.. To much when I was younger and screwed my credit up.
So no card locks for me
