Tailgate Price

Hey folks - I have a 1997 F250 CC 7.3. When I purchased the vehicle the previous owner put a fairly decent size dent in the tailgate when backing up to a 5th wheel trailer. A friend of mine has a new one that is the same color as mine he removed from his truck when it was purchased new back in 97. Owns seafood business and they always remove the tailgates to install freezers - has a handful of them stowed away in barn. Neither of us has an idea how much it is worth and I'm trying to come up with a fair price for him. Any suggestion??? THANKS

New condition + matching factory paint = PRICELESS

I paid $150 for a used one last summer that was a paint match. Exterior was good but the interior had about 1/4" bow and had a lot of the paint off. I saw a takeoff bed/tailgate combo from a 97 sell for $700 (new condition) last summer. I do have a repro tailgate on one of my trucks. They are thinner metal and I had to line it with aluminum diamond plate. Shipping is pricey on a repro too. Price a new one from the dealer and having it painted and you will gladly pay $200-250. Just my opinion

Last time I priced a new factory gate it was around $350, and that's without the two-tone paint, and without the factory pinstripe kit ($160 for top/bottom). And then the inside would have to be re-Permatex lined to match the rest of the bed. What a nightmare.

Even if they were free ,,After market tail gates are junk ,,if you plan on using it for anything but looking at.

I priced new not too long ago for myself (at my cost & painted for free )

Went with a new take off ,the correct color $350.00, & was happy to pay it ...

where you run into problems with tailgate pricing is all the accessories.....someone stole my tailgate a while back and i had to buy a new one. sure, i could get the "tailgate" for 150-200 dollars. but that was just the shell. by the time you buy the latch, lock and key coded to be same as door key, hinges, bushings, cables, the pan on the inside, all the interior guts, etc it ended up being around 900 dollars. its much cheaper to buy a complete one in the junk yard and just repaint it than trying to piece one together from the dealer. luckily mine was stolen on company property and my boss paid for it lol.

I'd like to know what dealer you guys shop at, because I checked with my dealer a few days ago and he wants over $650 for a gate (in primer)including hardware. Salesman says just the gate without hardware isn't available. And on top of it that $650 doesn't even include the metal trim panel on the outside!

Hey Angus-
When you fellas settle on a price, let me know. I might want to get in on the deal, if possible.
What part of the country are you in?
