What are the hauling limits for '99 F250?

I think I made a big mistake. We bought a 2006 Keystone Raptor 3612ds toy hauler. The dealer assured us I would have no problems with towing. What is the correct way to figure GVWR that your truck can handle. The hitch weight of the trailer is 2870lbs. The GVWR for the rear axle on my truck is 6087lbs. The trailer weighs 11,500lbs. dry.
Does this greatly exceed the limits of my truck.
Please help.
Ben

my $.02:

well BOOK values are: 500 lbs on the trailer hitch, 1500 lbs on the 5th wheel
16000 max combined total vehicle weight. my truck weighs 7880 with full fuel and my fat butt sitting in the seat, so I get 8120 for trailer.

CC'c, supercabs are somewhat lower because the base vehicle weighs more.

These are BOOK values, a lot of people tend to overload their trucks and this is just a bump till they wake up and prove me wrong.

go to a set of scales..dive up and weigh the front tires..pull the hole truck on the scale and weigh that..then drive off stopping with the rear tires on the scale....now take them ## and subtract from what the door sticker has for each axle..that will give you axle weight...for a total GVW of what you can put on the whole truck...take the weight you scaled for the whole truck and subtract from door sticker total GVW..its hard to get total wight on front axle with a under bumper hitch without over loading the rear GVW..that why they have 5th wheel or goose necks..also keep in mind..you cant go over GVW the hitch has set as well..not sure what or how your towing it...

IO tow the same amount of weight on my gooseneck trailer and I can say that I wish I had more gear in the rear end. Other than wishing for that and wanting more trailer brake I can haul it o.k. I have a 99 f 20 extcab short bed 4x4 with 232k on the clock. I tow daily but not that heavy everyday.

Thank you for replying. I am not concerned about total towing weight and I have a 20,000lb hitch but the hitch weight is what really has me concerned.

do you think 2870lbs. is the real wiegh of the hitch ?? 2870lbs.is what you can put on the hitch of the trailer...where did the 11,500lbs. dry wieght come from??? thats a heavy trailer..if you got that off the tag..that would be a GVW weight.the trailer may weigh 3000 lb dry that means you can put 8,500 in the trailer..that would give you the 11,500lbs GVW

in other words..my truck GVW on my door tag is 9990lbs..my truck weight with me and fuel is 7,720lbs...that means i can put 2270lbs in my bed....that would put me at 9990lbs..max GVW on my door tag

As far as what they engineered at factory and according to door sticker you will be considerably over weight. I believe 5th wheel trailer capacity is 12,500 lbs. I have a 99 and a 36' toy hauler that is 13'5K gross and am over weight on my rear axle for pin weight and over for gross. The truck will pull it and will stop it with good brakes but the decision is totally up to you.

I wanted the same trailer but knew my truck would struggle. Instead, I opted for the trailer I did to keep my truck. Here in Utah we have a stretch of highway going into the uintah mtn range that is 3%-6% (mostly the later) for 10 miles winding the whole way up. I have found if I want to keep the truck I will have to re-gear at minimum.

Unless you live in flat terrain, I would suggest another truck or another trailer.

Derek,
Thanks for the reply. They are listing pin weight at 2870lbs. Keystones site lists it at 2700lbs. The trailer dry weight is 10,800 with a max loading to 15,500. When ford came out with the 99 f250 superduty they advertised a payload of 3600lbs and that is what I remembered when we signed for the trailer(didn't have truck with us), I had it in my mind you could put 3600lbs in the box.

Put a set of Firestone Ride Rite air bags in the rear and roll with it. If you feel the truck is straining, think about replacing the 3.73 gears with 4.10s.

This is the trailer you are refering to, correct? Just trying to understand since you listed hitch weight & pin weight.

I guess I will be a bad example also. But I have a Dually and 4:10s 6spd but I pull a 3250lbs GNeck trailer with 10 some time 12 1600lbs rolls of hay on it. Yes the hills do get a little rough some time but I just drop a gear and go on. Never had a problem just watch the EGT's. I just did it today with 10 rolls, hauled them about 50 miles.

I've seen my buddy take his toyhauler and tow it with his chevy 5.3L 1500 silverado to the coast, scaling on the way at 6350# for the truck and 12,700# for the trailer. He used airbags and weight distribution hitch and goes back and forth 3-4 times a summer, 280 miles round trip. And his truck has 228,000 miles on it. So.... I wouldn't do it if it was my truck but, he still makes it every trip :-) just my .02. Just use airbags and a good brake controller that is customizable.

make sure your tires are rated for that kind of load.
the best trailer brake you can get is needed.

like they said above. these are almost essential.
1. pyro
2. airbags
3. re-gear

but also i think these are needed at that weight.

4. new exhaust
5. tuner (i haven't got one yet but a dp is in the future)

if your doing any long length id go for

6. trannie rebuild, with bigger cooler and steroided torque conv.
7. 6L aftercooler
8. look at a custom drive shaft for that weight.
9. custom intake.

your way over weight, but our trucks are way under rated. im sure with some$$ your truck can handle it.

forgot to add congrats on the trailer.
