Straight through muffler vs. Muffler Delete

Alright so i'm about ready to do the muffler delete but i have been reading up on the straight through muffle as well. Here in NJ it is required to have a muffler to pass inspection. So i was thinking i would just put the staright through muffler on. Is it as good as doing the muffler delete? Will i get the same sound? Or should i just bite the bullet, do the muffler delete, and swap the muffler back in with clamps everytime inspection comes along?

Hey Matt, it depends if you want to go thru with that every year. The reason i went with the muffler that came with my duals is i didn't want any problem with inspections with the cheater pipe, would have i wanted the muffler delete, yes, but didn't want any hassles. If you don't mind changing it out, do it. Sound wise, guys reported drone in the cab at certain speeds with the delete. In no way am i knocking either way, the louder the better i always say. Good luck.

In some states the turbo is considered a muffling device. I put the straight through muffler that came with my kit on mine. The sound is great and I don't have to worry about inspection issues.

I never thought of that Jim, good point. Then Matt, i would ask around first to make sure, Jersey is nuts, i been in that state and well aware of their inspection procedures, nut busters big time. Not telling you what to do, just informing you.

So, any advantages of the muffler delete as compared to a straight through muffler?

I'll tell you what Mike, Jersey is quite the ball busting state. Every little thing man it's crazy. I think i might just go with the straight through muffler if Jim is saying the sound it still great!

What would happen if you got a big muffler and cut all the baffles out and slid your straight pipe right on through so that you've got a "Muffler" on the pipe? That way when Mr. Policeman looks underneath he sees a muffler, but in reality it's just getting bypassed.

I have the walker BTM muffler and its straight through. Its hardly a muffler. It works well, its still loud, just a tad less than straight piped. Lots of turbo sound and all.

EDIT: I just saw you already have a 4" exhaust. I would still toss in that straigh through muffler, it would just eleviate you from having to install a muffler each year.

Straight through is muffler is going to sound better. I hate the straight piped turbo flutter. It's ridiculous when you're next to somone with straight piped 7.3. Sounds like complete crap.

The straight through muffler is going to cancel most all of that turbo flutter and still give you lots of turbo sound and some deep tone, WITHOUT TURBO FLUTTER. - my .02

If you want a really good sounding muffler, get the Aeroturbine. That sounds way cool on any exhaust.

Had an MBRP straight thru muffler and replaced it with a straight pipe. Love the sound. Like was said earlier, turbo is considered a muffling device here (TX)
