Bent Rod in # 2

I have a 2005 F-150 5.4. I took the engine in for a knocking noise which they determined was the cam phasers and also said there was a knock from the bottom of the engine. They determined that there is a bent rod in the # 2 cylinder. Warranty covered the cam phasers but said the bent rod is normal wear for 60,000 miles and they won't cover that. I don't think a main component of an engine like the rod should have normal wear like that with only 60K. Does anyone agree this is normal wear? Also, my warranty company is Continental. Has anyone dealt with this company before? Thanks everyone!!!!

I wouldn't say a bent rod is "normal" for any number of miles, period.

Would this cause something similar to a misfire when flooring it from the start? When I floor it the engine will loose power a couple times then continue.

I take it you have an extended warranty? If so, then a powertrain warranty usually covers part failure on a part lubricated by oil. If this is the case, the only reason I would figure the bent rod isn't being covered is if the problem was caused by a non-covered part. I find it hard to believe a bent rod would be concidered normal. It might be a good idea to get a second opinion at another dealer, or contact you're warranty company (if you haven't done it already), or contact Ford Custumer Service.

You don't bend a rod under normal circumstances. You do however bend rods when there is liquid in the cylinder, Hydrolocked. And your truck being a 2005, you should have recieved a extention on the injector warranty which are known to leak when the truck is off and can fill the cylinder with enough fuel to bend a rod when you go to start it. Or you were out mudding and got water in the engine. But to tell you a bent rod is normal for 60,000 miles tell them to pack sand. Sounds like a leaky injector and they should replace the rod under the extended injector warranty if it caused the problem.

I am wondering how they determined that it was a bent rod. It could be a wrist pin, a rod bearing, who knows, and it certainly is not normal. I agree with the second opinion idea.
