1960 f250
Just bought a 1960 F250 with a 312 Y block. Been doing a little research and found out some interesting things about these motors but having trouble finding parts. The truck has a 12 inch lift so i know the motor is going to struggle a little bit to pull the truck around. Looking to add some power to the motor. On a tight budget, what would be the best things to do and where is a good place to find parts. Also, any info on the Y block would be great.

If you don't get a response, write to "Col Flashman." He's the resident 60s guy. If he writes back, just filter out any remarks that sound abrupt - it's the medication

Hey Boe 312,
These y blocks are great little engines. You'll have no problem turning larger tires with it. Headers are cheap and perform well, 4 V intakes are available usually around $125.00 on ebay. I used to sell them for $100 but now I'm out of them. Make sure its an ECZ-B intake and NOT the ECZ-A intake.
Good luck and keep the questions comming,

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I'll do some looking on eBay and see what I can find. Also, does any one know what gears might be in that truck, I know they came with a couple different ones but with the 312 and 4 speed manual trans I figured that might narrow it down a little bit so if anyone has an idea let me know. Thanks.

yea its hard telling what gears are in it or even what axels are in it for that matter since its obviously been built out of various parts. first indication is that you stated it had 312 (sweet good for you) it must have been swapped in since i dont think the trucks normaly came with the 312 as they had the 292. I could be wrong so dont quote me tho. next is the 12 inch lift so its hard telling what the guy who lifted it did to the suspension or axles. Dont know what the point of all that ramble is but cool truck. i have a 59 4x4.

Thanks for the info, this one did actually come stock with the 312 and it does have the Dana 60 front and rear. The guy i'm buying it from didnt build it but as far as he knows the drivetrain is all stock. I'm still working on getting it towed down here but should have it this week so once i do i'll get the numbers off of it and figure it out.

There is no such thing as a Dana (Spicer) 60 factory installed in 1959/63 F250 4WD's.
The 1957/63 Ford Truck Parts Catalog doesn't even list a Dana (Spicer) 60, all it shows are Dana 44's only, and there were two different ones.
With a 3,000 lb. front axle capacity, the Dana 44 was used.
With a 3,500 lb. front axle, the Dana 44-6CF was used.
No Ford F Series truck was ever offered with a 312.
Post your VIN, as it will define when decoded, what engine it came with originally..which was NOT a 312!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 312 was only offered in the Thunderbird and police interceptors to my knowledge. Nonetheless, the Y-block is a great engine. Mine is still running after 49 years without a rebuild (143,000 miles). Here are some links for various performance parts and information:
