5.0 to AOD seperator plate question...

I decided to go with an AOD transmission in my 56, since its just now being reassembled it was a good time to make the change. So today I clean up the seperator plate and go to mount the transmission onto the 5.0 engine and I find that the starter bolts are misaligned between the plate and the transmission. The starter holes in the transmission are about 1/2 inch farther out than the holes in the plate. All the holes in the engine to plate to transmission line up fine. I bought this engine as a builder and the plate came with so I can't vouch for what it is...could it have been from a manual transmission installation?

It most likely comes from a car with the smaller flexplate than the AOD came from. (11" compared to 12" for example) Finding both a flexplate and spacer plate for the AOD shouldn't be hard to do.

Possible the plate is from a manual, but either way you'll need one for the AOD.

Sounds like you have a plate for a Standard trans. My old man had a similar situation trying to put a 5.0 into a Ranchero.

i think they are available aftermarket if you cant find a used one.

The flex plate has AOD stamped on it so I know I'm good there. I guess I'll have to dig up the correct seperator plate to match...thanks.

I have been researching the 4r70w forever and come across tons of aod stuff. Go to this page and about 1/3rd of the way down they have a block plate for the aod to small block conversion. Its new with the inspection plate but costs 90 bucks. hope this is what your looking for or helps

Lots of good stuff on this website, thanks!
I wouldn't think that this should be so hard, the engine and the trans are both from an 89 Mustang...it's not like I am trying to bolt an AOD to a Y-block or anything. I guess that I'll have to hit the junkyards on Monday to see what they have lying around.

Your old separator plate may have been for a C4, sounds like the same issue I had when I switched to AOD. I went the same way, new plate from ebay. Just make sure you get the inspection plate too, sometimes they try to sell that separately.
