How wide should my 9" rearend be on my '54 F100?

I have a 54 F100 I am working on. My plans are to put a mustang 2 front suspension on with air bags and 2" drop spindles (in progress), and put a 4 link on bags in the back with a 9". I am looking for a 9" but don't know what width I should go with. I don't want to tub the bed but I still want some depth to my rims. I have been looking for about 58" hub to hub.
Anybody got any ideas or experience with this?

I think the stock rear track is 60 inches (drum face to drum face?) and if at 58 in. the wheels / tires will clear the in side of the box / fenders / springs then good, you can use a deeper (offset) wheel?

Look in the article / specs section there is an awesome article that tells you just about everything you need to know about the front and rear suspensions.

Be Cool

Use this to measure whats in place now - put the numbers on the top side (axle plate/drum face, center of spring pad. etc)
Now you have something to work from

Thanks for the help. I am still trying to find the right size but all the info is making things alot easier to find what I need. Would like 31 spline, trac-loc.

Welcome to the board! Explorer 8.8's have 31 splines and usually have trac-loc....plus can have disc brakes. Downside(?) is 5x4.5" wheel pattern.

Most 9" rears I know that have 31 splines and trac-loc are '73 and newer 4x4's.... Too wide. (there are some earlier 31 spliners though.)

The 9" I have is (according to Number Dummy) from the mid 60's. Heavy Duty; Police, T-bird or wagon. It's 57" from flange face to flange face. It currently has 28 spline axles and I am going to buy the 31 spline axles and trac lock for it. The bolt pattern is currently 5x5.5 and I want to go 5x4.5 for better wheel selections and disc brakes. Wilwood does not make a kit for the 5x5.5 pattern on the 9" (or so the guy I talked to told me.)

I like the new Mustang wheels and I can put 18x10 on the back and still fit everything inside the fenders. I plan to tub the bed for a little more room and a bit wider tire. I have removed the leaf springs and put a triangulated 4-bar set up with Air Ride Tech shockwaves in it. That gives me 4" more space on each side to get a wider tire under the fenders.

Good luck with your truck.
