smoking issue 04 6.0

hello all, been a lurker for a long time so i decided to join eveyone here. here's my issue. when i start my truck it'll blow white smoke til it's warm which i think is o.k., the temps here have been 25-35 and real foggy, but after awhile it'll start smoking blue, then clear up and go away until i put it in gear, and then it starts smoking again. not terribly heavy, but you can see it. if i rev it a couple times it'll really blow the blue smoke. then i drive it and in about 5 mins it's cleared up. at cruising speed 60-70mph if i give it throttle while it's in overdrive i can hear the turbo spooling fine, but if i chop the throttle and get back on it, it smokes for about 5-10 seconds afterwards. still has plenty of power and i havent noticed any decrease what so ever. already cleaned the egr valve, which was filthy btw, changed fuel filters and oil also. i'm the 2nd owner of the truck and had 3-5-7- injectors replaced at 98,000 miles. it now has 111,000 on it. to me it seems like it's getting to much fuel, causing my smoke problems?. sorry for the long post

I was going to point at the egr valve. Even though you cleaned it are you sure it is operating correctly

i have no way of checking it, but when i had it hooked to a code reader there were no codes. also i'll add that i have no loss of coolant as of yet, so i dont think the egr coolers bad. would it smoke all the time if it was?. wouldn't it put water in the intake if it had a leak all the time?.after i drive it and it sits overnight there's still pressure on the de-gas bottle cap. it's really driving me nuts why all of a sudden i'd start to get blue smoke with no driveability concerns at all. i dont run it, but what would bio do to it?.

I think it may be an injector (seal) issue, blue is oil.

I think at those tempuratures a little smoke is normal. uphere where I live it is very common for diesel pickups to have smoke with a blue tint. Till the engine is working and up to temp.

Blue is NOT always oil it can be unburn raw diesel.

You'll want to check the threads on "heat flash" and/or FICM. I have the same problems and think they have provided the solution. I go to the mechanic tomorrow.

well the dilema continues......i was on my way to work and noticed the smoke was getting worse. seems every time i would let off the throttle it (the smoke) would build in the exhaust and plume out when i would take off from a stop. got it back home and ran it in the driveway and now it seems the engine doesn't sound as "crisp" as it used to. shut it off and fired it up and a huge plume of blue smoke came out the exhaust, almost looked like it was burning injector calibrating oil. i disconnected the egr valve and that made no difference at all, the smoke dont go away now. what happen to the good old days when you could actually t-shoot a diesel without a computer?. could it have blown an injector tip?, or maybe there's an injector stuck open?. it's never used any oil or water since i've had it, so i dont think it's burning either of those, and there's no blow-by to speak of. thanks ash289, but i think i'm beyond the latest flash. if your'e smoking as much as mine is and that fixes it i'll be amazed.

Stellhead2,

Where you able to fix your problem. I also have 04 PSD with the same problem. Mine smokes mostly on start up until it warms up. If I plug in the block heater the truck will just smokes slightly like it should. I'm going to try Hot Shots and get the heat flash. The truck starts great just smokes.

Hey all,,I'll tell ya what to look for,,Its oil in the exhaust,,coming from the turbo. An oil seal in the turbo is done.It took me a week to convince my dealer that its broke. Check for oil in exhaust,,hope this fixes your problem

HEALED!!! The FICM Heat Flash fixed the truck. No more white smoke, no rough starting, or lack of power for those first 2-5 minutes. $99 - 1 hour service charge minimum.

rthacker, check the egr cooler FIRST. i wouldve swore i had a bad injector, but the blue smoke mustve been caused by hot water scavenging the un-burnt diesel off the cooler. put a coolant system press. checker on it and see what you come up with. i didnt notice hardly any water loss at all.towards the end of my fiasco it smoked so bad i couldnt see the back of the truck. pull your egr valve out and check for liquid in the intake. if you see what looks like fuel its water.if i wouldve listened to the guys on here and not tried to re-invent the wheel it wouldve saved me about 1600 bucks.
