Moog Upper Ball Joints = Moog Control Arms?

All,

I'm sure there's mention of this in a thread somewhere on here.. i'm just unable to find it.

Need to do the ball joints on my 'new to me' 2000 Expy EB.. local shop recommended that I do the uppers as well since I have it taken apart anyways.

Reading on here has led me to the conclusion that the Moog ball joints are the way to go. Lowers appear to be direct fit, however most parts stores say that the uppers do not fit OE control arms, only the Moog control arms. Is this correct?

You need to purchase the entire upper control arm for your truck. You can replace the ball joints in the aftermarket control arm but not the factory one.

Upper control arm and ball joint

MisterCMk is correct. Also, the Moog joints have grease fittings.

Just looking at Rock Auto's website.. it looks like the control arm comes with ball joints. Would these be the upper ball joints (Moog Part #'s K8724T and K8722T)?

And then I'd just need 2 lowers (Moog Part # K8695T)?

Sorry if these are silly questions.. but i'm new to this.

Birchy, assuming you have a 2 wheel drive Expedition, those numbers should work.

K8724T is right upper control arm with ball joint
K8722T is left upper control arm with ball joint

K8695T is the lower ball joint for 2 wheel drive Expy ...you will need two of these, one for each side.
Good luck

i got mine from RockAuto... and yes, you buy the whole arm with balljoint in it, it all comes together as one piece... with zerk fittings.. RockAuto was the cheapest, and they were at my doorstep 2 days later.
I did upper arms, lower ball joints, and tie rod ends... all MOOG... its quite a project, have fun!

When you remove the lower ball joints you will need a big hammer. Don't use the ball joint press as it won't work. You will see why when you get the old joints out. Simply remove the clip and beat the snot out of it with the 3lb hammer to get the old joint out.

I went to autozone and borrowed 2 presses... When you have 2 kits, you then have enough fittings to get the lower joint out, nice and easy, using the press properly... i cant imagine beating that thing out with a sledge. Pressing the new one in was tricky too... the C style clamp in the kit barely fit on there enough to press the new one in. I definitely went through a few beers and a few swears on this project...haha.

Wow.. sounds... fun!

I wonder how much my local mechanic would charge me if I bring him the parts.

well its a 6 hour job at the least... and labor can be anywhere from $50 - $110 depending on the mechanic...

ball joints R and R

I did the upper control arms myself...no sweat. Found a mechanic at an independent shop who did the lower ball joints for about $125 per side I think. I supplied the parts (Moog)

If I could get it all done for $600ish including parts, I think that'd be worth it. $1200 on the other hand... screw that!

Did you remove the hub/knuckle assembly? Removing those will give you the clearance you need to get the Autozone C-clamp press in there. That's what I did, there was no other way I could have gotten the cheater bar on the C-clamp bolt. My lower ball joints came out easy and the new ones popped right in; although it took a while to figure out which adapters to use.
