Speedometer stops at 40 mph...

So... it's been colder than hell the past few nights here. I got into my truck to go to work tonight, and the speedometer gets stuck at 40mph. It still accelerates fine, but the speedo goes no further than 40 mph. Transmission seems to be shifting okay. When i slow down, the speedo will follow back down to 0, but when I go again, it still stops at 40. I haven't a clue what to do, any help?

small update

Here's the kicker. The freakin' speedo starts working again after approximately 20 miles, and it's done this twice now. I haven't a clue where to look.. Any pointers? Pleeaase?

Bobby82490 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Maybe pull the speedo gear and sensor out of the transfer case and see if anything is abnormal.

If I replace the cluster, would I have to get the cluster reprogrammed/configured for this particular truck? Or is it a direct plug-n-play and it's up and running?
