Marmon Herrington Model Numbers for 1950?

I have a 1950 F-5, with the Marmon Herrington all wheel drive conversion. I have seen parts/maintenance manuals for Marmon Herrington, but they go by a Marmon Herrington model number, rather than the Ford model number. Anyone know what the Marmon Herrington model numbers and related Ford model would have been in 1950 (or for all bonus built years)? I would like to pick up one of the manuals, but have no idea which would be correct.

Thanks,

Duane.

Duane - I've got 1951 M-H literature that gives the breakout. It should be the same as in 1950. There are several models listed depending on your chassis set up. Rather than try to copy them I just did a "quick and dirty" scan of the chart. You'll see that the F-5 is classed as an R6 in many applications. As I recall the F-6s were grouped in with the F-7s and F-8s in some applications. They did the same with F-2s and F-3s. All were termed R32-4. Hope this helps. Stu

I should have looked it up first! The F-6 was a letter "V" series with 12 models to select from. The F-7 was the "Q" series with 10 different models, and the F-8 was the "W" series having 5 models. Stu

Stu,

That maybe helps some. The maybe is because the model numbers you have on that literature seem different, but similar, to model numbers on some literature that I may be interested in buying. On ebay now is literature for 1951, which indicates model numbers Q5-4, Q5L-4, Q6-4, Q6L-4, and Q7-4. On ebay, the item is at:
Marmon Herrington 1951 Q54-Q6L4 Ford Manual/Parts Book - eBay (item 380096835717 end time Jan-20-09 17:55:08 PST)
(or ebay item number 380096835717)

Maybe the "Q" is the same as the "R" but a year earlier? It sort of looks like the Q5-4 should be for an F-5.

Any thoughts?

Thanks much already.

Duane.

Duane - The expert on this is Chuck Mantiglia. I'll email him and ask him to look at your question. The one thing I'm certain of is that the "R" series covered multiple years. The same no doubt would have been the case for the "Q" suggesting that the eBay manual could be for an earlier truck. Your truck would have had the MH model number on the plate that's mounted over the windshield. Assuming that's missing, another place to look would be on the front axle. On mine the R32 is stamped into the axle's long tube and is real plain to see. Each axle was numbered by MH. For example, my three are R32-342, R32-544, and R32-561. Stu

Stu,

It should have been obvious to look at that MH plate (above windshield) more carefully--which I had not done until now! It's there and gives the chassis number as R6L-4-438911, indicating model R6L-4. That matches the literature you scanned, because my F-5 is a 176" wheelbase unit (Ford model 9R6T).

BTW, what literature is that you scanned from? I've been on the lookout for MH literature, but have not found much yet.

THANKS!

Duane.

Duane - That's from a March 1951 M-H brochure that covers the LD-7 and all the "R" series trucks. Six pages. I'll work on getting a straight scan of it and attach it to a PM. I might have to take it to the library to get some straight copies, so it might not be today. Stu

Stu,

That would be great to get a scan. Whenever is fine--no rush on my account. I think I know enough to not bid on the manual up on ebay now.

Thanks again,

Duane.

Duane, Good to hear from you, I have M-H trucks and I am putting together a registry of surviving M-H trucks in any condition, their owners, and serial numbers, along with a good picture or two, of each truck, and any history related to each. Any future restoration pictures, updates, or ownership changes can be submitted and added later on, with an ongoing former owners list included. Also trying to include transfer case numbers if any, and front axle production number, which is a number that some of them have stamped right on the front of the drivers side axle tube near the gear housing. this will add greatly to the authenticity and the value of any of the trucks included, and will also help owners with parts and maintenance issues. I can send you a copy of what I have when I get it together. Any owners info in this registry will not be given out unless OK by the owner. Keep your eye out for any other M-H trucks around you and pass this on if you can.
Thanks, Mark in Indiana thechassisman@comcast.net
