sounds like sand poured into a bucket

1st post, I've searched but haven't found. I've got a 01 f-350 7.3 250,000miles. I have noticed that while cruising anywhere between 30 and 50mph that when I use just enough throttle to maintain speed it sounds like sand being poured into a bucket, let-off it goes away ,give a little,it goes away.dose anybody know what this is?could it be a problem?

Sounds like you're hearing the turbo. Is this a new sound or are you just noticing it?

Is this noise that you are hearing when the motor is cold ?????? It could be the EBPV on... that would make that kind of sound !!!!!!

Yes the EBPV is what makes your truck sound like a jet engine, or the hair dryer sound out of the pipe.

auto, I've heard the jet engine sound on warm-up, this is different, it might be about the same sound as water spray off a large truck hitting the windshield. but that is not what is happening

I'm having trouble with this too. We have some members in WI, though -- might try hooking up with one of them up there. In Chris' sig is the "RHN" (Road-side Help Network). See if you can find someone close to you.

But your first description "of sand being poured in a bucket" is a hissing sound, and the turbo makes that noise normally. On a non-mod'ed truck, it's pretty muted, so you have to have pretty sharp ears to hear it. I hear mine constantly, and I like it.

Well, if you know what the EBPV sounds like and that is not it, then I am thinking it could be a bad bearing somewhere that only makes noise if there is no torque load on the drivetrain.

thanks guys, this is a company vehicle but I'm the primary operator. The dealership that we go to for service isn't very good, but that is what the owner wants, I usually have to tell them what to do, they don't diagnose very well.I think I'll tell them to rebuild the turbo 250,000 on the original, I was just hoping that some-one knew for sure

well has the truck been mor slugish lately? maybe you have exhaust leak? did you try to see if you have soot anywhere on the firewall? and you said it had turbo rebuild recently? maybe the back "Y" piece is not attached correctly... just giving some pointers

I'm about 3 hours northwest of you, I might be able to run down Saturday or Sunday morning to help diagnose.
