I wasn't sure what the resistance across the switch was so I stuck a small fuse in it so that it would blow the fuse if anything bad came of it.

Same here, and they never tried to charge me or anything. In fat I am actually the 4th owner of the truck, they said it did not matter, the truck was covered under the recall

Look at it this way. It gives you an excuse to go to the Dealer's service dept and eat their donuts and drink their coffee and then go drool over the new trucks/Mustangs in the showroom!!!

Why couldn't you just leave it hang free? The switch is all that the circuit feeds, so unplugged there wouldn't be any need for a fuse to link the two wires together. The only thing that wouldn't work would be the cruise control.

I think it would be a lot easier to sue before you burn to death, but who knows I'm sure there are some good lawyers on the "other side".

It does not matter, especialy if you just bought the truck. They (ford) gave me a little grief because they had sent me 3 letters and I waited a long time to bring it to them. If you got the letter I would suggest getting it fixed soon. Can't remember where, but I saw a picture of one burnt up and it wasn't pretty. Also I beleive the recall says the truck does not have to be running to catch on fire.

It was my understanding that most of the trucks that burnt were not being driven at the time, I guess it was just kind of a random thing.
I took mine to the dealer and it was maybe 15 minutes including the tech screwing around on his way to the truck (I didn't even drive it into the garage they did it in the parking lot).
I really didn't take the recall seriously at first when they sent me the letter but after checking on it here I took it in right away. They didn't give me any greif even though I am the 2nd owner.

That was the point of bypassing the switch. I want my cruise control to work until Ford gets around to replacing my switch...

I had my 'new to me' truck done at the dealer last week. I took it in just for kicks and asked them to run the VIN. There was an open recall for the cruise control harness. They fixed it in 30 minutes. Of course I did end up spending a little at the parts department. Motorcraft is better than the Chinese junk at the parts store.

Sounds pretty safe to bypass the switch that kills the cruise when you brake. I guess as long as that's a secondary kill switch (brake lights being primary) you'll be alright. Just hope you don't need that backup.

Well, it's a backup. If I press the brakes and for some reason it decides not to shut off, I'll press OFF. It that doesn't work, I'll put it in neutral. If somehow it gets stuck in gear at the same time, I'll turn off the ignition. If that doesn't work, then God probably doesn't want me to live

People this is a SAFETY recall, Ford doesn't care who owns the vehicle but Ford does care about your SAFETY. This switch is "hot" at all times even with the key out, do you like your garage in one peice? Get to the dealer and get the recall done, it's no charge. If the switch leaks they replace the switch and jumper lead if the switch is not leaking they will install a fused jumper harness so the fuse will blow keeping the voltage from setting the brake fluid on fire. No excuse for not getting recalls done once you've received a notice.

You can check your F/L/M products for recalls here.
