Yup, if your state has emissions testing (or OBD-II checks at the minimum), you will not be able to register that truck at all. A Carb'd built up 350 has no chance at all of passing emissions

but i do have a chevy 454 big block wit 600 hp and 650 torque
but i dont think that will fit and spend 600 on that to change the cams to get to pass inspection and lose 50 hp about and put that in wit the race tranny and spend 2k gettin it to fit and set up the computer and its already fuel injected
Well since you have to pass emission inspections, no carbuerated motor will pass in your truck.

There is a recent thread here about swapping in a Naviagtor motor(4 Valve 5.4) and making some real good power without any power adders. Swapping in a used 5.4 out of a parts truck would be far easier than swapping in a 350, 454, or 302.

yea, good luck with that hope you have alot of asprin, i gotta a buddy whos workn on a 85 toyota and put a carb 78' 302 in it, a c6 tranny, dana 44's, etc.... he is a machinest and takes lots of stuff to work to fabricate/clean/modify and he is out in the garage 5 outta 7 nights working on it, and its been 2 years and its almost done....the point is like stated above its gonna take a huge amount of time n such . my opinion would go to the junk yard and find a 5.4L that you can just drop in

I'm sick of all the naysayers on these boards, especially those who don't have the experience but come in on posts like these to bash someones idea without offering any creative criticism. I would love to know how many of the posters on this thread have actually attempted or completed a project of this magnitude. If the kid wants to try to do this let him try, or at least offer some prior knowledge. Talking about your friend's cousin's kid that tried to do it doesn't mean chit to me.

On edit: Most states require that a swapped in engine be of the same model year or newer, and have been available in the platform it is being swapped into. IE you could put a 5.4 in a truck that had a 4.6 as long as it is the same model year or newer

A stock 5.4L will produce very close to 300 hp and 350 ft/lbs torque, but more importantly, does it at low RPM, making it better for towing, or even just hauling the Fords sturdy frame. With a tuner, and even some engine mods, such as larger pistons, and maybe a modified crank, you could easily beat that. You could find a good local machine shop and rebuild your old engine, and maybe turn it into a monster.

I tend to agree that replacing the current engine with another 5.4L is the best bet for your truck. The Pro-formance Unlimited website products are gear towards the street rod crowd that needs a easy power plant for these vehicles or even the 60 - 70 model year street machine or muscle car. The guy that suggested the 5.4L 4V swap was right, a direct swap and will give the performance that you are looking for. With that you could even go with a Rousch supercharger upgrade. Good luck with whatever you finally decide on.

i think you could rebuild the motor thats in it. it would be the easiest way to get the end results you want. engines are air pumps. port and polish the heads or decrease the combustion chamber size for more compression. put a high flow intake on it with fuel upgrades and a bigger throttle body.

but thats strictly my opinion.

if the motor isn't blown up and broken in half...you can probably have it rebuilt much cheaper than a whole motor swap.....i'd find a reputable engine building shop....and since it sounds like you have the ability to do the swap yourself...pull the motor...take it to them...and let them rebuild your current motor....upside of this is you can spend as much or as little as you want doing this, and don't have to take a cookie cutter rebuild..pay for what you want done

Sounds like good advice to me!

Headers can be found on ebay, I have the OBX stainless steel long tubes which are a knock off of the Dynatechs.

If you are going to replace the heads, you should look at a set of "Patriots" or even better "Fox Lake" if money isn't an issue. cams and a good custom tune would put some serious hp to the wheels.

I guess all us nay-sayers turned him back to the path of good. Try sticking a 1968 400 pontiac in a 98 Bonneville with a 700R4, GMC 1500 12 bolt rear disc brake! Talk is cheap.
