What do you think of the 4.6L?

I like the 3 vavle 4.6's numbers. We'll be test driving Explorers with it in them and I think it will be fine in an F150.
But I've never really thought the 2 valve 4.6 was all that. It's reliable, but doesn't get much better if any MPG in the F150 vs the 5.4 for the power hit.
I'm hoping that the 2 valve being put in the 09s is only being put there to run out stocks of the 2 valve 4.6.

With the tooling and other major assembly structure in place and the cost to build being much less than the 3V,the 2V will be the base engine. You must keep in mind that a large percentage of F150 sales are fleet work trucks, and simplicity for maintanance and cost are king there. the 4.6L 2V wins this hands down. Plus, it's a proven engine that's been in production since '92 in one form or another.

I have a 4.6 in the Aviator, and although it isn't tough directly off the line, it will definately hold you back in your seat once the launch has been produced. I use it to pull my camper, and it doesn't back down from a challenge, however I think that the 4.6 that is in it, is a 305 hp 4 valve per cylinder. (at least according to the sales sheet)

i will have to say i own a 2000 f-150 4.6 whether its 2 or 3v idk but i do know its a guttless pig and terrible on gas. and now having a bunch of coil problems with it. but thas not why i hate it though. it just has no ***** at all. any little hill it has to downshift and scream. And its been that way since i got it with 40,000 miles on it, now it has 103,000

I will say that we have 2 valve 4.6 Crown Vic Police Interceptors at work, and I'm pretty confident that my truck in my sig would walk away from them. Overall I'm not impressed with the 2 valve 4.6.

no im not sure what gears i have but i know they are pretty high. i mean going down a flat highway its fine but i live in upstate ny and theres nothing flat about it so it is constantly downshifting. i have pulled some pretty heavy stuff with it and it will pull it but it is always screaming. i get about 11 mpg mixed

mtcrss14,
i have had the same downshifting with my tranny when loaded. mostly with the cruise engaged. taking the cruise off and uing the downward momentum to get up the next hill i find less down shifting. try that for a while.
the coil packs i am told are usually good for 100k and then need to be replaced. mine started to fail over 200k. replacing them at 100k should just be considered as normal pm. nothing runs forever and you got 60k from them under your ownership. change now and enjoy the entire next 100k. i understand they can be purchased online for 70 bucks. replace all that have not been done then replace them all next time.
happy motoring.!!

99 F-150 XL 2WD 4.6 here. Just commute to work and occasional light duty use (dirt, mulch, appliances, whatever....) 143,000 miles and still going with a little oil burning on cold morning start ups. If the oil burning gets too bad, I'll have it rebuilt and go another 200,000 miles. Been a damn fine truck.
4.6 is real good for running the races to and from work. Plenty of power when you need to pass that butthead that cut you off a mile back.

Both the 4.6 3V and the 5.4 3V will be phased out in favor of the EcoBoost 3.5 and the new 5.0 4V (which only loosely based on the Modular with DAMBs and slightly wider bore spacing).
The Modulars are on their way out, I'm sorry to say.
