Getting my '70 F250 Highboy going
Hey everyone,
I've been kind of quiet in this forum lurking about. I've also been busy working on my truck. My dad bought it new when I was 1 year old. I drove it to high school and college. I am happy to get to restore it. Here is an update on my '70 F250 4X4.
After getting the engine rebuilt (again) I started working on the body in the Fall of 2007. I took a workshop/autobody class at the local community college for three semesters. I learned a lot in those classes and was able to do a good chunk of the body work myself.
The cab of my truck was a mess. The floors on both sides were rusted out as well as the front cab mounts and the back cab corners. After talking with Dan (TigerDan), we decided it would be easier to replace the cab using one from '73 camper special donor truck he had. Due to rust and bad dents, we ended up replacing over one very long four-day weekend in September 2008 the following.
Since then, I worked on welding closed 31 trim holes in the new cab that my old truck did not have (roof top marker lights, trim along the bumpside, etc.) and getting it ready to paint.
Before Christmas, I got a local guy who has an autobody shop take it to paint it. I stripped off all of the trim, grille, stuff inside the cab, bumpers, door handles, and other stuff to get it ready for painting. I could not get the bed bolts loosened with my tools, so the painter had to do that as well as a few other trim pieces. I did not want a perfect paint job since I plan to keep using this as a truck and not a show piece.
You can see some of the prepping, and painting shots below. I just got my truck back today. Now comes the fun job of putting all that stuff back on. Fortunately, some guys from my chapter are offering to help. Thanks to Dan and the others who have been a huge help so far.
Before
During the cab swap.
We hooked up an electric winch to the rear bumper of Dan's '68. His '68 is in amazing shape.
Old Cab
Part of the floor of the old cab. Almost a Flintstones' car with no floor.
The Frankenstein truck.
In the paint booth with the bed off.
The cab and front clip is painted
Back at home.
I will update with more photos when I am done with this part. I also have to get the bed sprayed with Line-X and treat the underside of the truck. You can see more photos of my truck in photo galleries.
