Question Issue when installing power steering pump pulley

Hi All!

I learned more about mechanics today than in my previous 28 years of life! I took off and replaced a worn belt and drove to autozone to pickup a new pulley and the pulley puller. After a lot of effort taking the old pulley off (glad I did this at home and not in the parking lot), I spent about three hours trying to push the new pulley in, after all this time I realized that the bolt won't lock into the shaft of the pump, do you think I'm doing something wrong? or could it be that the threads inside the shaft are damaged? Is there a way around if that happens to be the case?

Thanks a lot!

If you think the threads are damaged you can run a thread cleaner down it.
Make sure it has the same threads as the original bolt.
