I think one of the biggies is the Piezo injectors housed under the valve covers now. As far as inside the cab goes, I think they started using the quiet steel in '08 like in the F-150s. I also think I read something about foam in the A-pillars for sound deadening in the interior.

I was wondering the same thing. Definately no mechanic here. The difference is absolutely incredible. I have both so I hear the difference in my own driveway all the time.
Thanks 2X6 bulldog and powerstroke72 for the info.
Its just so funny rolling up to stop lights with the 6.0 and watching some people roll the windows up. Or when I let my wife drive it, when she pulls out of the drive just a bad a$$ sound. I will miss it when I get my 6.4 in late March or early April.
I am sure you have driven one but the ride is incredible.
We have a 05 ford 500 that I thought was quiet on the road but my 08 F250 Lariet Crew Cab is "much" quieter rolling down the road than the 500. The better half has even commeted about it several times.

I have mixed emotions on the sound. I cant stand to listen to the older Cummins but it would be nice to get a little exhaust noise on the 6.4. Apparently even a full exhaust kit doesnt add much sound.
I love how quiet the 6.4 is going down the highway, pulling through the drive-thru, or sneaking out the door at 5:00 a.m. but I agree a diesel should have a little sound to it. I had a 4 inch exhaust on a 6.0 that I thought was perfect. Just whistled under partial throttle and sounded like a mustang at full throttle.

What International says about the 6.4 liter V8 diesel:
Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH)
The MaxxForce 7 is the quietest V8 diesel engine in North America, registering only 68.9 dBA in a low idle test.
Precise fuel delivery with the piezo-electric injection system reduces NVH through multiple shots per combustion cycle. The system also utilizes a pilot injection into the cylinders, which also aids in NVH reduction. The total system improves the combustion rate and eliminates typical “diesel” noise.
The redesigned rear-mounted gear train eliminates noise and vibration causing crankshaft wind-up, making the MaxxForce 7 even quieter.
A single-piece nodular iron bedplate design retains all four bolt main bearing caps, making the engine more rigid and less affected by vibration, a feature typical of more expensive engines.

The quietness of the 6.4 is one of the primary reason we went to a Diesel tow vehicle. never could understand why one would pay huge bucks for a motor that sounded like a garbage can full of ball bearings. Had folks that did not believe this was a diesel.

It's all about the pilot injection and it's about time. The very early 6.0s had this, but the injectors couldn't take the duty cycle. It's one of the promises that they cut after it was out.
I love how quiet the 6.4 is. When you spend a good portion of your workday in a diesel, you get sick of the noise quickly. I do at least. I can't stand the rattle and turbo noise anymore.
