2001 F-150 5.4 triton very load POP, POP noise
Yesterday...Jan 10....driving about 35 miles an hour and Pop, Pop load noises coming from the engine.......pulled over and turned engine off.....open hood.....nothing....turned engine on and it sounded like the exhaust was open........(no) it just sounded that way with the pop, pop noise and misfiring...........?????
I think it's a blown cylinder head gasket...........????
What will this cost to repair?????
I did not turn engine on....called tow truck.
74,000 miles ...light duty work...Kings Ranch Edition

Might be a blown out spark plug. It's a problem with these engines that affects a relatively small percentage. But when you have millions of these on the road, a small percentage is quite a few engines.
If I'm right, you're looking at a few hundred (or hundurt depending on where you're from) if you have it helicoiled. If you have had it towed to the dealer, they will probably want to replace the head for thousands.
There is a product called a Timesert I think that is made for this. Ask you mechanic about it if you didn't take it to a Ford dealer (they'll probably want to rape you for thousands). It's doable yourself if you're mechanicly inclined.
With luck maybe Ford will finally address this design flaw (not enough spark plug threads) and fix our trucks like they did with the 7.3PSD CPS recall years after production ceased. I'm not holding my breath though.

Typically it rips the whole plug out of the head and takes the threads with it, thus the helicoil or head replacement.
However I did have a plug self destruct in my engine and it was letting gasses out between the insulator and metal. In that case, I was able to get the plug out w/o destroying the heads.
The black part on the second photo is where the insulator was moving up and down and where it was letting gasses out. How it did not ruin a valve or something only god knows.

Can they fix the blown out plug or should I get a outside shop??

Ford will fix it alright! For about 4000.00!!! Find a shop that has dealt with the Blown Plug problem if you don't want to do it yourself. Done them as cheap as 200.00 and as costly as 500.00. Just depends on which plug and the amount of damage done. The kit is around 500.00 if you want to do it yourself. New coil is around 40.00. Not real hard to do , you just have to be careful and patient.

Something I learned after watching him install a Snap-on repair insert into #4, is to absolutely make sure you removed all the metal shavings. After he tapped the head for the insert, I was almost certain that after he blew air into the cylinder for a few seconds that all the shavings must of blew out. But, he showed me on his little diagonistic camera thing all the leftover shavings still on top of the piston.
