4.6 to 5.4 swap

This has to be one of the easiest swaps to do. Everything from the 4.6 bolted right onto the 5.4. Only had to extend a couple wires to accomodate the extra width of the 5.4. The exhaust headers I used were from the 4.6 to make the pipes all line up. Had to modify the coil pack brackets to bolt on to the motor but was able to use the factory ones. Have had swap complete now for two days and everything is running like it should off of the 4.6 computer. I am going to have to check the spark plugs soon to see if I need to add a programer to help accomodate the extra cubic inches.

Nice report!

What year, and other specifics about the vehicle?

You will benifit alot from retuning to the 5.4l. I put about 15k on my truck with the 4.6l tune before i found someone to tune my edge evolution to make it work..>Woha what a difference.

It really comes to life. If you think it runs better now, then wait till it gets a decent tune on it.

I have a question, I have a 97 f250 Light Duty truck with a 4.6l and 4r70w with 220,000 miles. I have a 97 5.4 I would like to swap into it. My question is, will the 4r70w handle the little extra torque and would you recommend using a 5.4 torque converter or the 4.6 converter in the truck? The 4r70w transmission had clean fluid with no debris in it and shifted fine when I bought the truck 3 weeks ago. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jesse

m90mustang, you might want to start your own thread for this.

In the meantime, the 4R70W, with some very minor improvements is behind the 5.4L in the Superduty E-series vans and seems to hold up just fine.

I think, given the truck, the 4R70W will do just fine.
