Looking For Aftermarket Cooling Hoses 2001 Escape V6

I'm replacing a leaky radiator and water pump, and would like to replace the hoses at 185,000 miles. I've been able to find seven of the 13 that carry coolant at Rockauto.com, but several remain elusive.

Shown is the water pump housing. The large diameter hose goes to the thermostat housing, and is 1.5" dia. on one end, and 1.375" on the other end. The small diameter hose goes to the oil cooler, and is 3/4" on one end, and 5/8" on the other.

I haven't been able to find any Gates, Dayco, AC Delco, or Goodyear equivalent. Cost at the dealer is $21.45 and $26.15.

I seem to remember from somewhere in my searching, that at least one of these hoses is used on a Taurus or Contour. Any help would be appreciated. I've already go $368 in parts coming, so I'd like to contain costs, if possible.

There's another hose, not pictured, that runs from the coolant bottle to the driver's side of the radiator, 3/8" ID. The Gates website specs a standard piece of hose, although the one on the vehicle has a 90 degree bend at the radiator and is obviously molded. The dealer has it for $59.06. Any help would be appreciated. And if anyone thinks this would be better posted over in heating and cooling, just let me know.

Paul

Those prices don't sound too out of line. You will pay close to that for an aftermarket hose of any quality. May be time to bite the bullet.

Got one of them resolved.

Turns out, the large diameter hose is actually the same ID on both ends (1.5"). I measured both nipples with a caliper and both are the same. The clamps are both the same ID, as well. I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with a Gates aftermarket application specialist and he was able to ascertain that the part starts out as Gates #22448, and is used in several applications. In the case of the Escape, the hose is specified as "cut to fit", meaning that either Gates or Ford cuts down the length of the hose, depending on application. Here's a picture of the hose initially:

and you can see how it's been cut as installed on the pump. There's also a Dayco equivalent, #71984, as well as Napa, #NBH9081. If you need a vehicle to match it at the parts counter, it shows as 2007 Mercury Monterey, lower radiator hose. The Napa branded Gates part was $10.35, the Dayco is $6.99 at Autozone, which is closer to what I would expect to pay.

The other hose wouldn't cross - apparently, the volume is so low, that it wasn't made available in the aftermarket. Same goes for the $59 hose from the coolant bottle to the radiator.

I did buy a length of 3/8" hose for the coolant bottle to radiator, but the OD is larger than the original, and won't fit in the retainers that are molded into the fan housing.

At this point, any victory, no matter how small, is welcome.

Well, I've got the vehicle back on the road now, having replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and 10 of the 13 hoses that carry coolant. It was a bit of a challenge to ID all of them and find replacements, without relying solely on the dealership. Most of the chain stores will yield only the upper and lower radiator hoses and the two heater hoses. I'll post this in the hopes that I can save someone a few hours of frustration as well as archive the information, in case I need to do this again someday. I ordered most of these from Rockauto.com, here's what I came up with:

1. Upper Radiator Hose (upper radiator to thermostat housing) - Gates 22569

2. Lower Radiator Hose (lower radiator to thermostat housing) - Gates 22567

3. Heater Hose (firewall to plastic hose connector) - Dayco 87804

4. Heater Hose (firewall to thermostat housing) - Dayco 87805 (dual ID hose)

5. Water Pump to Intake Manifold - Gates 22571

6. Water Pump to Thermostat Housing - Gates 22448 (this hose is molded, multi-application and must be cut to fit). This hose also has application as "2007 Mercury Monterey, lower radiator hose". The best fit results from cutting a section from the middle. In my post above, I incorrectly identified this hose as having two different IDs; each end has ID of 1.5".

7. Thermostat Housing to Plastic Connector on Intake Manifold - Gates Green Stripe Straight Coolant Hose, PN24220, 1.25" ID, cut to 3" long.

8. Plastic Hose Connector to Hardline (joins with #3) - Gates 18810

9. Coolant Reservoir to Radiator (passenger side) - Gates 19819

10. Coolant Reservoir to Radiator (driver's side) - Motorcraft KM4861, aka 5L8Z8C633BK, available from Rockauto $30.79, dealer price $59.06. I didn't see this hose on Rockauto.com until after my order had shipped, and so I didn't replace it, thus I can't confirm that the Rockauto part is correct. If the picture that Rockauto uses for this part is correct, then it has to be the hose I've described. Rockauto may have the wrong PN in KM4861, as fordparts.com IDs this part as KM4769. You may be able to substitute a length of bulk heater hose. Be aware that there is a 90 degree bend molded into one end of the OEM part and while 3/8" ID hose is readily available, the OD tends to be larger than OEM, and may be a tough fit in the retainers on the fan assembly.

11. Water Pump to Hardline - YL8Z6N746BA, Dealer, $26.15, dual ID hose. Also available at fordpartsgiant.com, $16.83. Over on Escape City (Escape City - Ford Escape Forums - Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Mazda Tribute, Ford Maverick - View topic - Coolant pipe / hose leak), someone reported success using Gates 21740, which is also a dual ID hose, with a different bend configuration.

12. Oil Cooler to Hardline - YL8Z6N746CA, Dealer, $40.35. Roughly 4" long, I believe 1/2" ID, comes directly off the oil cooler. This hose has very little curvature, I think a piece of bulk hose would suffice. Both oil cooler lines run very close to the exhaust manifold, so I don't know if they used a special rubber formulation for heat resistance. I didn't replace this hose.

13. Oil Cooler to Hardline - YL8Z6N746DA, Dealer, $63.38, similar to #12. I didn't replace this hose.

Most of these are available as either Dayco or Gates. Parts interchange is easily found on either company's website. The cost savings from Rockauto easily justified the shipping - dealer cost on most of these hoses is 3 to 4 times the aftermarket prices and in most cases, Rockauto beat the local parts stores by a decent margin. Interestingly, the OEM upper and lower radiator hoses that I removed were marked with both "Motorcraft" and "Gates Mexico" on each hose.

Those of you with high mileage, beware of the plastic heater hose connector that joins #3 and #8; when I removed the hose clamps, the plastic connector snapped and crumbled in my hand. I replaced it with an aluminum part that I turned on the lathe. Plastic equivalents are readily available, 5/8" x 5/8".

If you're going to replace the two hoses that originate at the oil cooler, I'd suggest waiting until an oil change, since these are slightly obscured by the oil filter. Even better access would result from removing the exhaust manifold.

I spent a fair amount of time on the phone with a Gates aftermarket specialist, trying to ID these hoses. He pointed me toward what I think is a fairly valuable resource: http://www.gates.com/~/media/files/g..._web.pdf?la=en. This details all the aftermarket molded cooling hoses that Gates manufacturers, giving IDs, centerline dimensions, and pictures. We're talking thousands of hoses here. You could, potentially, identify an aftermarket equivalent to an OEM hose, by dimension and appearance, even if you just needed a section cut out of a Gates PN.

I hope that someone finds this info useful in navigating the business of replacing coolant hoses on their Escape.
