Depending on what it is I am at .70 to 1.25 a mile.....I also have to cover cargo insurance, taxes maintenance ect.......for that tractor I would be right about .90-1.00 mile.......you also have to look at tolls on the route(if any)....you will also be coming home empty.....the best I can tell you is roughly figure your fuel cost for round trip(incl. tolls) and figure your time/hotel(I am usually in the truck).....since you will be coming back empty you will just about come out even.....one of the companies I have a contract with I have a flat rate of .70 for round trip(price varies by .05 depending on price of fuel....example is 2.75 to 2.99 a gal is .70 and 3.00 to 3.24 is .75 and so on)...which is nice because I am empty on the way back and can usually find something to haul back too

IIRC I figured it cost me .51 a mile to run my truck loaded....that is including insurance, taxes and putting aside an amount for maintenance......but I cant remember what fuel price was when I came up with that figure....I have been meaning to do some new figures and spread sheet for this year

Well i can tell you the towing rates up in MA, they are state regulated so its the same for the entire state. Its $90 to hook it and then $3 per mile round trip plus a state fuel surcharge which is 3% this month and this is if the police have your car towed. If its a personal call, like you just call for a tow, the companies around my area charge $75 to hook it and $2 per mile. How ever much you charge i would deffinetly throw in the deal that you need to get paid round trip even if its not full price on the way back.

thanks for the info guys. i made the guy an offer of a lifetime. i want to see the country up in there, i hear its beautiful. thats one main reason. but, my number one reason for a cheap charge is i am currently doing nothing but setting on my rear as it is either too rainy to do anything, or too cold. therefore, i figure if i can take a 3-day trip, and clear $500 its better than setting at home thinking of ways to spend money in my normal fashion. therefore, I figured $500 for fuel, $200 for room and food, and a little for toll. i told him i would move it up there for $1700 all said and done, just to quit setting around the house. cheap, i know.

titan and fox are saying tow fees...as in tow truck...I was giving transport fees.......if that guy takes that price I will send you a few cards to hand out.....no offense but he might be bending over when he pays you....I move everything form motorcycles, campers, show cars ect......I dont think I could charge one of my customers that kind of price for that distance if I want to stay in business.

That is a 1200 job for me...even if I come home empty I still make 500 on it after taxes.....I figured it at 1000 miles one way......the guys that tell you 1.50 are out of there mind ....maybe when fuel was 4.50 gal.....only way I see that price now is in a big truck.
Also. you are not running DOT or MC #s....so if you are hauling for hire and are caught.....you are sitting on the side of the road(looking at some very hefty fines as in thousands) and your customer is making calls trying to find someone to haul his tractor.

Try proving that hes hauling a tractor for hire, they run numbers, it doesnt come back stolen, he can say hes taking it up for a friend, his step dad, etc... Things that dont have a title are EASY to get by with. If they have a plate, or a vin, your right, if not, there really isnt nothing they can do, he can even say that he sold it to a guy on ebay and is taking it up because the fee was inluded in the sale price of the tractor, that way there is TECHNICALLY no way to move it for hire since he is still in flase ownership of the tractor. LOL I haul for hire too, and the only states where the trooper rolled his eyes and called me a liar was South Carolina. There was no way for him to prove it though.

here in Mi if your truck has a company name on it it has to be registered to the company...might want to check on that...even if you have magnetic signs and they are on when you get pulled over..pretty decent fines here

if you are in a car transporting an envelope for hire across state lines...legally you have to run DOT,MC #s log book ect.

You are absolutely correct.....do I run legal all the time....99% of the time yes...but you only need to get caught once to know the consequences...and they are not fun or cheap.Just an example I was fined 1200 for being 700lbs overweight and 2500 and shut down for 24hr becuase my log book was a day behind.I hope it does not happen 2stroke...but if an accident occurs that even makes it worse....your insurance will not cover the tractor and that is the least of the problems.I am not saying dont do it....just watch your a$$ and get legal if it becomes something regular.
I am sorry if I am coming off in a bad way...I am not trying to.I have just seen it happen before.....I make a decent living at it(I am coming off a 1.5 month vaca). There are alot out there HotShotting and a bunch of guys that run legal that want something done about it.

I will stop now.....just be safe if it works out 2stroke
