1992 explorer relay

Anyone know what the 2 relays under the fuse panel that is located in the engine compartment go too? The front relay is ticking and I don't know what it is or if it is going to fail soon.

Thanks for any help, Justin

One will be the EEC relay (that powers the engine management system), the other will be the fuel pump relay. Factory relays are usually black for the EEc relay, and green for the fuel pump relay, but there's no telling what you'll get if they've been replaced. If you look at a wiring diagram to see what color wires go to which relay should allow you to identify which relay is which (the ones in Chiltons are usually adequate for this, and can be obtained for free in the vehicle repair guides at autozone's website if you don't have the print manual).

Maybe. I expect most people would say to go ahead and replace -- they are inexpensive and easy to change, so you won't be out much if it doesn't fix it.

I might switch the two relays and see if the "ticking" follows the relay or stays with the socket.

As Mrshorty said, you should switch the 2 and see if the problem moves. If it does, then I would replace the one that ticks. If either of these relays goes out, you will be in a no start situation.
